Faculty of Engineering and Technology

The faculty was created sixty years ago, and trains engineering specialists for metallurgy, aircraft engineering, and other hi-tech industries.

Undergraduate programmes are offered in three areas:

  • study of materials;

  • metallurgy;

  • machine-building and nanotechnological processes.

Master’s programmes are offered in metallurgy and information technologies.

Doctoral programs are offered in the sphere of future materials technologies and hi-tech machine-building.

Well-developed research facilities, experienced teaching staff, unique computer facilities, and cooperation with leading research centers and universities in Russia, Germany, the U.S., and China make it possible to combine fundamental academic education and research practice and create professionals of world-class quality.

The faculty also develops and offers double diploma projects with the leading universities of Germany and Taiwan, and holds exchange programs for lecturers, researchers and students, allowing our students to find their place in international research and practice activities
Faculty of Law

The Faculty of Law admitted its first students in 1970. Initially, the Department of Law was a part of the Faculty of Humanities, and became an independent faculty in 1976.

The head of the Faculty of Law is Professor Artur Gennadyevich Bezverkhov, Doctor of Law.

Graduates of the Faculty of Law get employed by many industry sectors. They carry out a range of activities in drafting laws, law enforcement and law application. The type of professional activities of the graduates depends on their specialization.

Special attention is given to research activities. Research results are used in creating new laws and law enforcement functions.

Institute of Aviation Equipment

The Institute of Aviation Equipment was created in early 2015 upon the joint decision of two SSAU academic councils in 2014 and 2015. The decision to create the Institute was dictated by the aspiration of SSAU management to integrate the activities of the two oldest faculties of KuAI and SSAU (aircraft and maintenance), to improve their mobility in working with students and research organizations.

The Institute of Aviation Technology is managed by Professor Valery Dmitrievich Elenev, Ph.D., D.Tech.

The Institute accepts students for instructional programs at various levels:

  • Bachelor’s programmes;
  • Specialist’s programmes;
  • Master’s programmes.

Bachelor’s programmes at the level of specialist are provided in the following industries:

  • Design and building of airplanes and helicopters;
  • Technical maintenance of airplanes and helicopters;
  • Servicing of transport; air transport operations;
  • Quality control at machine-building enterprises.

The implemented Master’s programs qualify their graduates to work in the areas related to using CALS technologies for creating complex machinery and diagnostic equipment for such machinery.

The Institute is comprised of five departments, a correspondence school, various research divisions and unique units, such as:

  • R&D Institute of Aircraft Design;

  • Interdepartmental Small Aircraft Design Bureau;

  • Aviation Modeling Construction and Design Bureau;

  • A testing aerodrome.

The Institute of Aviation Technology employs highly-qualified teaching staff; has unique instructional and research labs; computer labs and Russia’s best testing aerodrome with dozens of aircraft, including planes from the 1930s and modern jets. Students get the unique opportunity to practice their skills at the testing aerodrome. Students learn to operate various aircraft in real-life conditions.

Leading departments of practically every faculty of the University take part in shaping the future graduate. The all-around development of the future specialist is complemented by the creative activities of students. The combination of these factors, with a high overall level of general and special training, allows institute alumni to work successfully in every field of technology, implementing their capabilities in various spheres: from creative engineering to large business and administrative operations at the highest level.

Famous alumni of the Institute as the successor of the Faculty of Aircraft Engineering and the Faculty of Maintenance include:

  • V.V. Gorlov — Deputy Minister of Civil Aviation in 1986—1991, Head of the Department for Maintenance of Airworthiness in the Ministry of Transport of Russia;

  • O.N. Susyev — Mayor of Samara in 1992—1997; Vice Premier of the Russian Government in 1997—1998, First Deputy Head of the Presidential Administration in 1998.

The Institute enrolls a large number of foreign students. Most of them major in maintenance. This is due to the fact that specialists in the maintenance of modern aircraft are in demand worldwide. The EAT Department trains these students on unique Airbus and Boeing training models, which is an additional incentive for international students to come and study here. The curriculum includes traditional training methods and a considerable share of innovative instruction methods with interactive and long-distance education formats.

Institute of Economics and Management

The Institute of Economics and Management is led by V.D. Bogatyrev, Ph.D., D.Sc. (Econ). The Institute offers Bachelor’s and Master’s programs. Throughout their studies, students actively participate in research activities, presenting their work results at various conferences. 

Institute graduates are employed in the public economy and marketing sectors, many become businesspeople and managers. Graduates are employed by: 

  • industrial companies;
  • marketing and consulting agencies;
  • transport companies;
  • banks;
  • government bodies;
  • civil service bodies.
Institute of Engines and Power Units

The Institute of Engines and Power Units is one of the leading SSAU divisions, founded in 1942 as the Faculty of Aircraft Engines.
Its alumni include managers of leading aerospace industry enterprises. The teaching staff of the Faculty includes 35 Grand Doctors of Science and Professors, and 65 Doctors of Technology, Associate Professors.

The Institute consists of eight Departments:

  2. Lappeenranta University of Technology (LUT)A contract on the program of double diplomas for Master’s and Doctoral students between LUT and SSAU was signed in 2014. According to this agreement, students will be able to study simultaneously in two graduate programs and receive two diplomas. Two SSAU staff members completed graduate programs at LUT as part of their Ph.D. study program in 2015.

Institute of Rocket and Space Equipment

The Institute of Rocket and Space Equipment (IRSE, http://irkt.ssau.ru/) has grown from the Faculty of Aircraft Engineering, and was founded by order of the Rector in 2015. The IRSE employs around 100 faculty members, including one full member of the Academy of Sciences, several professors, grand doctors and doctors of science, associate professors. The IRSE consists of the Department of Strength of Materials, the Department of Theoretical Mechanics, the Department of Space Engineering and Intercollegiate Department of Space Research.

Students are trained in research, project management, production technology and equipment maintenance. The IRSE offers bachelor’s, specialist’s, master’s and doctoral degrees. Students study a wide range of natural sciences, computer coursework, a range of courses in humanities, and major coursework in engineering and production of space technologies.

Main Directions of IRSE activities:

  • Space orbital cable control systems: dynamics of movement and rollout, project parameters, management and stand equipment for practicing on the Earth;
  • Long interplanetary space flights of low-thrust spacecraft;
  • Project ballistic parameters of spacecraft for removing space garbage from orbit;
  • Use of sun sails for long flights;
  • Computer technologies for the design of spacecraft for distance monitoring of the Earth’s surface with apparata of different purposes;
  • Space logistics and control of groups of spacecraft;
  • Composite materials in rocket and space technology;
  • Dynamics of regular and chaotic movement of spacecraft with variable structure;
  • Development of ways of increasing fatigue endurance limits.

IRSE creates major projects in cooperation with rocket and space enterprises of Russia and foreign partners with the support of various foundations:

  • Development, production, launch and operation of nanosatellites;
  • Development, production, launch and operation of AIST small spacecraft.

IRSE cooperates with major space machine-building corporations, including RKTS Progress JSC, ISS JSC, RKK Energia, Raduga OJSC, EMZ OJSC and others. Every year, IRSE seniors complete their short-term internships at the Baikonur, Plesetsk and Vostochny Cosmodromes.

Institute of Social Studies and Humanities

The Institute of Social Studies and Humanities was founded in 2016. It consists of the Faculties of History, Psychology, Sociology and Philology. The Institute is led by Viktor Alexandrovich Kuznetsov, Ph.D.

Faculty of History

Initially, founded in 1969, the Department of History was a part of the Faculty of Humanities, and became an independent faculty in 1976. The Faculty of History is led by Professor Yuri Nikolaevich Smirnov, D.Sc. (Hist.)

The faculty offers Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees.

Graduates of the Faculty of History receive a classical education. They are employed in the following areas:

Faculty of Psychology

The Faculty of Psychology works actively on research projects and develops international cooperation programs.

The Faculty is led by Professor Konstantin Sergeevich Lisetsky, Ph.D. (Psych.)

The faculty offers Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees. Students receive training in psychology, actively applying their skills in life, and participating in various events. The Faculty of Psychology has laboratories where students complete their practica.

The Faculty of Psychology has been actively integrated into the international educational space. The Faculty organizes forums and conferences, broadcasts lectures of famous scholars.

Faculty of Sociology

The Faculty of Sociology was first created in 1989, when a division of Applied Sociology was created as part of the Faculty of History. In 1993, the division was transformed into a faculty. The head of the faculty is Professor Viktor Yakovlevich Machnev, Ph.D. (History). In 2016, the Faculty became a part of the Institute of Social Sciences and Humanities.

The Faculty has its own media lab. The faculty offers Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees.

  • Sociology. Specialists in sociology carry out sociological studies.
  • Social Work. Graduates are employed by law enforcement agencies, rehabilitation institutions, and educational establishments.
  • Cultural Studies. Experts in this area work at various cultural institutions.
  • Journalism. Students in this program learn to become mass media professionals.
  • Television. This program has been under development since 2012, training professionals in television.
  • Philosophy. This program has also been under development since 2012 and graduates teachers of philosophy for governmental bodies and educational institutions.

Faculty of Philology

Initially, the Department of Philology was part of the Faculty of Humanities, and became an independent faculty in 1976. In 2016, the Faculty became part of the Institute of Social Sciences and Humanities.

The dean of the faculty is Associate Professor Anna Andreevna Bezrukova, Ph.D. (Philol.)

The faculty offers Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees.

Graduates of the Faculty receive a broad range of fundamental skills in protecting and promoting linguistic and literary heritage, working with texts and communicating.

The Institute of IT, Mathematics and Electronics

The Institute of IT, Mathematics and Electronics emerged in Samara University in the year of 2016. It is composed of the following three Faculties: Biology, Physics and Chemistry.  The institute is guided by Vladislav Viktorovich Sergeev who has a doctoral degree in engineering science.

The Faculty of Computer Science

The Faculty of Computer Science was founded in 1975.

The Faculty of Computer Science offers an opportunity to get a prestigious -quality education in the discipline of IT technologies, receive guaranteed employment in the high-tech companies of the IT industry and businesses under various forms of ownership (including the banking sector), and to receive a decent wage. The Faculty utilizes the training concept of "learning to learn", premised on the integration of the educational process and scientific research, thus allowing graduated students to autonomously develop complex software, create and adopt new applications for information technology, develop and implement new principles and methods of researching the processes and phenomena, get involved in ambitious projects and create their own innovative IT companies.

To improve the quality of graduate training and coordination of interaction between the Faculty and employers, in 2007, the Faculty was used as a basis to establish the Corporate Information Systems Institute (CISI) (Director – Dean of the Faculty E.I. Kolomiets). In its ranges CISI now operates four functional teaching and research laboratories where students receive additional training that focuses on the needs of a real IT business:

  • perspective information technologies (in tandem with the EPAM Systems company);
  • automated real-time systems (in tandem with the SMS company);
  • intelligent security systems (in tandem with the Integra-S consortium);
  • corporate information systems (in tandem with the Haulmont company).

The educational process covering all areas of training and specialites successfully employs modern information technologies, the best traditions of Russian higher education and high-quality teaching are progressing and multiplying .

Research at the Faculty is carried out in  close  partnership  with the Institute of Image Processing Systems of the Russian Academy of Sciences within the framework of the leading scientific school of the Russian Federation "Computer Optics, Image Processing and Geoinformation" (Head – Viktor Alexandrovich Soifer, Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Doctor of Technical Sciences and Professor).

Based within the Faculty, the scientific-training centre "Spectre" was set up, which operates four scientific-educational centres: computer optics, space geoinformatics, nanotechnology and computer studies. It publishes over 100 scientific papers with the participation of its students annually.

Students are thus able to remotely access and use the resources of the parallel computing cluster (100 GFlops), the high-performance computing cluster (1.5 TFlops) and the "Sergey Korolev" supercomputer (20 TFlops) to learn advanced computational and information GRID technologies.

Students from the Faculty have repeatedly taken part in the semi-finals of the team world programming championships, held under the auspices of the ACM (Association for Computing Machinery International Collegiate Programming Contest). In 2010 and 2013, the Faculty team went out in the championship finals and secured a place of honour among the 30 best teams in the world. Each year, Faculty students win prizes at international and national competitions in mathematics, physics, computer science and other prestigious contests.

Within the Faculty operates a School of Informatics where high school students receive deep training in the discipline of computer sciences (School Director – Professor, Doctor of Technical Sciences A.N. Kovartsev.). Upon completing their training at the school, they receive appropriate certificates http://itschool.ssau.ru.

The Faculty of Mathematics

The Faculty of Mathematics received its name in 2016. It is the successor to the Mechanics and Mathematics Faculty, founded in 1969. Today, the head of the Faculty is a Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Professor Sergey Yakovlevich Novikov.
The Faculty enrols applicants for undergraduate, graduate and specialist training programmes.
Students can receive scholarships and grants, take part in conferences at various levels, sections on robotics and competitive programming.

Graduated students of the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics are typically employed in the following fields:

  • scientific research;
  • teaching;
  • IT-related work;
  • Information area; 
  • banking;
  • industrial establishments.

Specialists with diplomas from the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics are in demand among organisations with a range of different profiles.

The Faculty of Electronics

The Faculty of Electronics and Instrumentation is the successor to the Institute of Electronics and Instrumentation (IEI), which history traces back to 1962. From 1962 to 2015, it was called the Radio Technical Faculty of the Kuibyshev Aviation Institute.

At the present time, the Faculty unites the educational and scientific potential of the departments, laboratories and scientific and educational centres, staffed by highly qualified professionals who have devoted themselves to radio electronics. A significant percentage of the scientific and teaching staff are the graduates of the Faculty. Since 2015, through the achievements of the programme of competitiveness improving, a number of foreign specialists have swelled its ranks – Kai Borre (Denmark), Prabhash Mishra (India) and others.

Many research projects are carried out in association with scientists from Russian universities and academies of science, and there are projects with academics from other countries. In 2015, in association with scientists from China, a scientific laboratory was created which will conduct research in the sphere of space technology. This symbiosis of scientific and educational activities gives interesting opportunities for students who are able to fully develop their potential in their areas of interest.

The Faculty is capable of offering a variety of areas of training and specialisation of graduates which are welcomed by industrial enterprises, research institutes and design bureaux. High-tech industries are in need of qualified specialists in the field of radio electronics: designers, engineers, laser scientists and other professionals trained at IEI. For those who wish to engage in research activities in greater depth, post-graduate courses are available.

Throughout training for talented students who are experienced enough in foreign languages, it is possible to participate in international student exchange programmes with leading universities in Europe and around the whole world, including the double degree programme. There are training programmes implemented in the English language, such as the two programmes for Master’s studies in the sphere of satellite navigation, and from 2016 in the sphere of nanoelectronic device technology as well. For Master's graduates, there are programmes to train for a doctoral Ph.D.

Students of the Institute actively take part in Russian and international scientific conferences, seminars and schools, and are involved in the work of the laboratories and student design bureau. Together with students from other faculties and institutes under the supervision of experts and lecturers of the Department of Space Research, international projects are carried out for the development of nano-satellites and space experiments based on them. Students have the possibility to dynamically partake in public life, practice sports, reveal their talents in the Variety Theatre (STEM), they are provided with the sanatorium, swimming pool and much more.


The Institute of Natural Sciences

The Institute of Natural Sciences was established in 2016. It is composed of the following three Faculties: Biology, Physics and Chemistry.  The institute is guided by Aleksandr Fedorovich Krutov, who wields doctoral degree in physical and mathematical science.

The Faculty of Biology

The Faculty of Biology was created in 1970 as part of a joint chemical/biological faculty, and later morphed to an independent faculty.
The head of the Faculty of Biology is a candidate of pedagogic sciences, Associate Professor Gleb Lvovich Ritov.
The Faculty recruits students on educational programmes for undergraduate and graduate courses. They take part in field researches which are located at the following stationary locations:

  • the Botanic Garden;
  • the biological station at the I. I. Sprygin state nature reserve in Zhigulevsk;
  • the Hospital of  Biology Faculty  in the Krasnosamarsky Forest reserve , and other sites etc.

Scientific research activities are well developed at the Faculty of Biology performs and are subsidized by federal and regional agreements.
Students are enlisted to work in the student research laboratories. Many of them carry out their work in the laboratory complexes of the largest universities and research institutions of the state.
Graduated students of the Faculty of Biology are employed in the following organisations:

  • educational and scientific agencies;
  • national parks;
  • medical facilities;
  • nature reserves;
  • hunting operations;
  • food manufacturing industry companies;
  • administrative offices.

Many graduated students are employed in foreign countries: in Australia, Austria, Great Britain, Germany, Finland, France, USA and Japan.

The Faculty of Physics

The Faculty of Physics was established in 1969. At the present time, the faculty is headed by the Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Professor Valery Vladimirovich Ivakhnik.
The faculty recruits applicants to train on undergraduate and graduate programmes.

The main principle behind the learning process at the Faculty of Physics is a combination of fundamental training and the acquisition of practical skills. The Faculty has its own laboratories. The Faculty of Physics organises programming courses and has plenty of computer interaction experience.

Graduated students of the Faculty of Physics can find employment in the following areas:

  • educational agencies;
  • scientific research organisations;
  • design bureaux;
  • manufacturing facilities;
  • the oil and gas industry;
  • latest advanced technologies.

Many of the Faculty’s graduated students are employed in foreign countries.

The Faculty of Chemistry

The Faculty of Chemistry appeared in 1970 as part of the Faculty of Chemistry and Biology, and later turned to an independent faculty.

Students of the Faculty of Chemistry acquire fundamental theoretical knowledge and learn to apply it in practice.

Great attention is paid to scientific work. Young scientists participate in research paid from by federal and regional resources, appearing at international and national scientific events. The educational process is coordinated by famous professors.
