International Summer School in Tyumen
Students from 4 countries came to Tyumen State University.
Tyumen State University runs short programs every year. This year it was the English-language ‘STEP in Russian Energy: Society, Technology, Environment, Policy“.
10 young people from the USA, UAE, Netherlands and Estonia spent a month studying northern Russia’s economy, geography, energy and mineral resources as well as Russian history and culture. Classes of Russian were a traditional element of the curriculum.
Students also met local businessmen, officials and NGOs. Their schedules were packed – they took part in festivities and sports events, had picnics and excursions to Tobolsk and Yalutorovsk, as well as oil&gas installations.
Students explained that they consciously chose Tyumen over Moscow or St.Petersburg: the latter are touristy, and they wanted to see authentic Russia. They are happy with their choice – they liked the calmness and friendly vibes of Tyumen and were surprised by the hot weather as they reckoned Siberia would be chilly even in summer.
