Far Eastern Federal University International Summer School

Fifty students from Canada, the USA, China, Korea, Singapore, New Zealand and Japan came to Vladivostok for a short summer programme.

Far Eastern Federal University (FEFU) ran a summer school for Association of Pacific Rim Universities (APRU) students for the first time in July 2017. The students researched a variety of world problems, such as climate change, increasing amount of waste, excessive use of resources, worsening ecology etc.

Lectures, seminars, and practical studies addressed these topics. Italian scientist Luca Belelli Marchesini from Far Eastern Climate Smart Lab coached students in measuring greenhouse gases and using the data in weather forecasting.

The summer school participants split up to work on team projects. A group comprising students from China, Korea, Russia, Japan and the USA developed and launched Green Spot, an interactive city map highlighting healthy lifestyle areas, such as parks, bike hire centres and farmers markets.

After classes, summer school students saw places of interest in and around Vladivostok, learnt about Russian culture and traditions and tried their hand in nesting doll (matryoshka) painting and cooking pelmeni (meat dumplings) and other Russian national dishes.
