A.M. Butlerov Chemistry Institute
Chemical Faculty was formed on the basis of Chemistry Chair, organized in 1804, the year of Kazan University formation. Kazan Chemistry School had started its formation and development in 1835-1837 from opening of the chemical laboratory of Kazan University.

Most important events:
  • the birthplace of Russian organic chemistry;
  • the place of discovery of element Ruthenium;
  • the birthplace of organophosphorus chemistry.
This chemical laboratory of Kazan University is defined by historians as "The Cradle of Russian Organic Chemistry". Kazan Chemistry School gave the world a galaxy of outstanding scientists whose works constitute the golden fund of world chemical science. Famous chemists: K.Klaus, N. Zinin, A.Butlerov, V. Markovnikov, A. Zaitsev, F. Flavitsky, E. Wagner, A. Arbuzov, B. Arbuzov, A. Pudovik, A. Konovalov, O.Sinyashin, etc.

A.M. Butlerov Chemistry Institute was formed in 2003 on the basis of previously independent chemical departments of Kazan University: Chemical Faculty and A.M. Butlerov Scientific-Research Institute.

Today, the A.M. Butlerov Chemistry Institute includes 7 chairs and 8 research departments: chairs / departments of inorganic chemistry, analytical chemistry, organic chemistry, physical chemistry, medical chemistry, chemistry of high molecular and organoelement compounds, chair of chemical education, departments of stereochemistry, industrial chemistry and environmental chemistry.

Elabuga Institute of KFU
Elabuga Institute of KFU is a significant scientific, educational and cultural center of the Kama region dating back to 1898. For a century, more than 50,000 specialists in the field of education have been trained here.

In 2011 the Institute joined Kazan (Privolzhsky) Federal University. The priority activity area of Elabuga Institute of KFU is determined as SAU (Strategic Academic Unit) “A Teacher of the XXI Century” (training teachers for a changing world) held in the framework of the Program of improvement the competitiveness of main Russian universities among the world’s leading research and educational centers (Project 5-100).

Alongside with the teacher training the Institute prepares specialists in such areas as applied informatics, linguistics, transport processes technology, economics, management, jurisprudence, vocational training. A close cooperation has been established with the enterprises of the Kama industrial cluster and the Special Economic Zone “Alabuga”. Thanks to the practice-oriented training of specialists graduates of the Institute are competitive on the labor market and even undergraduates receive invitations from employers.

Nowadays 58 Bachelor’s, Master’s and Postgraduate educational programs are functioning at the Institute. More than 4,300 students and undergraduates, including more than 500 foreign students study here; 70% of 200 working teachers have academic degrees and titles.

Elabuga Institute of KFU has substantial educational facilities and equipment:

Such scientific trends and schools as “Problems of the theory of differential equations, algebra and geometry”, “A man in the cultural – historical and legal space of modern Russian society”, “Laws of development of the personal and professional potential of a specialist”, “Typology of the text. Evolution of genre forms in Russian and foreign literature”, “Linguistic Culturology and Regional Linguistics”, “Ecological and Biological Aspects of the Structural and Functional Organization of Living Systems”, “The Russian Province: Historical and Contemporary Socio-Cultural Problems” are being developed.

The teaching staff has worked out and is testing the first textbook on Russian robotics for schools. Among the Institute’s scientific partners are the University of Texas in El Paso (the USA), the Department of Educational Sciences of Dresden Technical University (Germany), the Institute of Foreign Languages and Media Technologies of the University of Greifswald (Germany), the Institute for the Promotion of Intellectual Integration in Vienna (Austria), the Teachers Training University of Hunan (China), the Belorussian State Teachers Training University (Belorussia).

The intensive collaboration with academic science has led to a significant growth of scientific publications abroad. The International D.Stakheev, M.Tsvetaeva and M.Makhmutov Readings attract the attention of scientific community. More than 500 teachers from Russia and foreign countries annually participate in the International Festival of School Teachers. Such projects as “Children's University”, “Interesting Science – to School”, "IntelLeto” (Intellectual Summer) are urged to awake children’s interest for science.
Higher Institute of Information Technologies and Intelligent Systems

 The Higher Institute of Information Technologies and Intelligent Systems (ITIS) is an innovative IT Department of Kazan Federal University, which was founded in 2011 jointly by the Ministry of Information and Communication of the Republic of Tatarstan, Kazan Federal University and the world's IT top brands. The Higher Institute of ITIS focuses on applied teaching and research and combines state-funded and grant models of learning. Starting from the second year of studies at the University students have their traineeship in the leading IT companies on a year-round basis, work on research and development in the labs created jointly by IT business and the Higher Institute of ITIS. Such approach makes students on-fire specialists.

ITIS delivers full-cycle education in the direction of preparation ‘Software Engineering’ including Bachelor’s, Master’s and PhD’s degree programs. Institute of Computational Mathematics and Information Technologies

The Institute of Computational Mathematics and Information Technologies was established in 1978 and is one of the largest IT-Institutes in Volga region of Russia. It produces experts competent in a wide range of state-of-the-art computer applications in education, science, industry, and management. The Institute carries out research in the areas of fundamental mathematics and computer science. 12 computer labs allow mastering modern information technologies, to work on term papers and diploma theses. The Institute maintains close working contacts with large domestic and foreign IT companies, as well as cooperation with leading universities and research centers.

Joint Double Degree Master Programs

Students can enroll to 2 selective joint double degree master programs organized together with Czech Technical University in Prague (CTU) and Shenzhen University (SZU). Students will learn both fundamental sciences and applied expertise. Duration of both programs is 4 semesters. The first year of the study is spent at the home University, and during the second year students go to their host Universities.

In the 4th semester students prepare their Master thesis, which should be written under the supervision of a professor from either KFU or a partner University and should be written and presented in English. Upon successful completion of the Program students shall be awarded a KFU and CTU/SZU Double Degree comprising the Russian diploma of Master's degree and the Master of Science level of CTU/SZU.

Institute of Fundamental Medicine and Biology

Institute of Fundamental Medicine and Biology (IFM&B) is a rapidly developing and achieving the goals of the institute as part of the KFU. IFM&B is the core of the unique biomedical cluster of KFU created to implement the latest research and development. Training of specialists is carried out at the international level. The curriculum has been adapted to correlate with European curriculum. To integrate education and science the IFM&B actively recruiting lectures and scientists from universities of world importance and support the educational process with the use of world level scientific equipment. The IFM&B has powerful resources from laboratories equipped with the latest laboratory equipment to medical centers (simulation center, experimental medicine center, phantom class, microscopy center and many more) which are aimed at obtaining high-quality training for future specialists. Students of IFM&B have a unique opportunity to undergo training in partner organizations in different regions of Russia and scientific centers of the world.

Institute of Geology and Petroleum Technologies
Kazan Geology School blends modern technology with classical university traditions. Institute of Geology and Petroleum Technologies is a powerful Russian centre researching hydrocarbon deposits, core material and reservoir fluids. The Institute actively develops modern methods to prospect for and develop structurally complex hydrocarbon reservoirs using newest stimulation technologies. Its multi-functional 3D GEO Centre relies on geological and hydrodynamic modelling software from leading designers. Modern equipment and skilled personnel enable the Institute to pursue a vast range of projects, from the study of core samples and fluids with traditional methods to complex modelling experiments with in-situ heavy oil and bitumen recovery.

Stratigraphy is a masters programme which the Institute has implemented in collaboration with Freiberg University of Mining and Technology since 2015. The Institute offers optional vocational courses jointly with its partners Tatneft, Gazprom, Geotech, Bashneft, Schlumberger, Sersel, Trimble etc.
Institute of International Relations

The history of the Institute of International Relations of KFU dates back to 1804, the moment when the Imperial Kazan University was founded. In a modern - form, the institute was established on November 1, 2013. Today the Institute of International Relations of KFU is one of the elite, innovative and successful modern educational and scientific centers of Kazan Federal University. IMO is rightly proud of its high quality professional education, fundamental scientific training, active research projects, broad international recognition and a profound study of foreign languages.

At present over 4,700 students, among them more than 600 foreigners (about 13% of all students) from 41 countries, are trained here. Scientific and pedagogical activity is provided by high-level scholars. The Institute provides training for students in all levels of higher education: bachelor's, master's, postgraduate courses. Two or more languages are taught in all areas of training at the Institute. Institute of Philology and Intercultural Communication

The study of languages, literatures and cultures in Kazan University dates back to 1804 when Imperial Kazan University opened the division of philology. Today its successor – Institute of Philology and Intercultural Communication – offers a range of bachelor, master and doctoral programs to over 3000 young men and women including more than 600 international students from foreign countries. The institute prepares experts in Russian philology, foreign languages (English, German, French, Spanish, Arabic, Chinese, etc.), Russian and world literatures, design and music. It is the only institute in Russia that educates professionals in Tatar language and literature. Besides traditional courses taught in Russian, the Institute of Philology offers double degree and joint programs, courses taught in English, winter and summer language schools.

Institute of Psychology and Education

The history of KFU Institute of Psychology and Education is the history of psychology scientists and teachers from Kazan State University and Kazan State Pedagogical Institute.

Pedagogical Institute joined Kazan University as it was founded by Emperor Alexander I in 1804. In 1918, it was restructured to Kazan Pedagogical Institute. In 1994, it was renamed to Kazan State Pedagogical Institute (KSPU). Tatar State University of Humanities and Education was established on the back of the KSPU. Institute of Psychology and Education, established in 2011, has eight departments:

Institute of Social and Philosophical Sciences and Mass Communication

Institute of Social and Philosophical Sciences and Mass Communication – is a growing unit, which continues and promotes long-standing university tradition of Kazan. Education obtained at the Institute enables graduates to successfully work in different socio-political and humanitarian areas of society, as well as in public and media communications. The Institute seeks to merge deep theoretical learning with applied inquiry.

Kazan (Volga) Federal University Naberezhnye Chelny Institute (affiliate)

KFU Naberezhnye Chelny Institute (affiliate) is a leader in the engineers’ training for the automotive and mechanical engineering, energy, construction in the Kama innovative production cluster of the Republic of Tatarstan (including the city of Naberezhnye Chelny and five most perspective municipal districts of the Republic).

Personnel’s engineering training is conducted in close cooperation with the country's auto giants like PJSC "KAMAZ", "Ford Sollers" as well as with the leading energy and construction companies.

The developing of practical skills is one of the main concerns of the institute management. KFU Engineering Center, created in 2013, operates on the basis of Naberezhnye Chelny Institute. The result of the Center’s activities is the conclusion of comprehensive agreements on cooperation with the leading world companies in the field of robotics and flexible manufacturing systems and high-tech equipment: Kuka, Siemens, Mitsubishi, Fastems, Haier, etc.

The laboratories from "KAMAZ" PJSC, "Ford Sollers", "Haier" and other companies operate in the Engineering Center. The unique laboratory of flexible manufacturing systems producing the complicated shaped body parts for KAMAZ trucks has been opened there as well as the OpenLab research laboratory called "Development and research of advanced materials", where the joint projects together with the world-class scientists are conducted. The Engineering Center is going to open more than 20 scientific and educational laboratories in the field of advanced manufacturing technologies.

Since 2014 KFU Naberezhnye Chelny Institute has been cooperated with the CDIO initiative as part of the innovative educational platform for the next generation engineers’ training for the directions like "Motor vehicle construction" and "Motor vehicle production technology". In the institute the special contract training with PJSC "KAMAZ" is organized.

Today KFU Naberezhnye Chelny Institute has six departments with 30 chairs, Engineering and Economics College with 10,000 students enrolled. Apart from the technical areas the institute presents the training for economics, law, social and humanitarian spheres.

Lobachevskii Institute of Mathematics and Mechanics
In Kazan Federal University mathematical sciences has the ongoing tradition, which start from the day of foundation in 1804. Today Lobachevskii Institute of Mathematics and Mechanics (LIMM) consists from nine departments, dozens of scientific projects and about five hundred students.
