University representatives answered international applicants and their parents’ questions.

Higher School of Economics opened applications for foreign nationals. Who can apply?

Competitive examinations are foremost held for Russia’s residents and compatriots. Separately, HSE arranged competitive selection for all international applicants, i.e. those who have no Russian citizenship, regardless of whether they live in Russia or elsewhere.

What’s the application closing date?

The deadline for foreign nationals is 14 August 2020.

How do I apply as a participant in separate competitive selection?

Register at the HSE website, choose one or two programmes and get a personal number.

How does competitive selection work?

To enrol in a bachelor’s degree programme, you have to pass two examinations. Choose a convenient date for your entrance tests using your personal account. Prospective master’s students have to pass a portfolio contest; they create a personal account to upload necessary documents and submit the application.

Does HSE recognise international examinations results?

Yes, it can accept the IELTS/TOEFL score as the entrance exam in the English language, or mathematics exam results on the strength of IB or other international diplomas.

Can international applicants get a scholarship?

A HSE grant can be awarded based on competitive selection results: the grant size depends on the number of points scored. Undergraduate and graduate grants can cover up to 70 percent and 50 percent of the tuition fee, respectively. A 70-percent discount is provided to winners of the International Youth Olympiad 2020 (in the appropriate field).

When is the contract signed?

Immediately after the competitive selection. After you have signed the contract, you have to transfer half of the tuition fee by 25 August. Documents are submitted after 20 August; upload the scans first and bring the originals when you are able to come to the university in person.

What mode of study will be available if the COVID-19 situation does not improve?

Classes will begin online if borders remain closed on 1 September. HSE has everything necessary for online learning.

Higher School of Economics has four campuses: in Moscow, St Petersburg, Perm and Nizhny Novgorod; any of the four is available. The university trains 43,700 students including more than 4,000 foreign nationals. More than 80 undergraduate programmes are offered including eight English medium programmes and five double degree programmes, and over 160 master’s programmes (including 40 English-taught programmes).
