Branch of National Research Nuclear University MEPhI, a leading Russian engineering university, started work in Tashkent. It will train skilled nuclear industry engineers and researchers. The faculty includes Russian and Uzbek specialists; classes in field-specific subjecdts will be conducted by visiting professors from Moscow; general subjects are taught by Uzbek teachers. In 2019, applications are only open for undergraduate programmes such as Nuclear Power Engineering and Thermal Physics, Nuclear Physics and Technology, Heat and Power Engineering and Electric Power Engineering and Electrical Engineering; graduate programmes are expected to be launched in the future.

MEPhI Tashkent Branch offers free tuition, but graduates will have to work five years at an Uzatom Nuclear Energy Agency company or at the Nuclear Physics Institute of the Uzbek Academy of Sciences. To take part in competitive selection, applicants have to show to the Admission Board their passport, secondary education certificate, medical certificate and four 3 x 4 cm photos, and pass the examinations in mathematics, physics and Russian. MEPhI is a well-known Russian university which takes high positions in prestigious education rankings. For example, it is in the 51-100 group for Physics and Astronomy in QS Rankings by Subject 2019. Also, MEPhI placed 89th for physical sciences in Times Higher Educaiton Rankings by Subject 2018-2019.
