The ranking includes five Russian cities with a population of over one million.

Researchers said day- and night-time walks around the city were safe. The crime rate is low, as is the likelihood of assault due to skin colour, nationality or religion. The ranking also includes St. Petersburg, ranked 133rd (index 60.57), Moscow, ranked 143rd (index 59.35), Yekaterinburg, ranked 198th (index 53.21), and Novosibirsk, ranked 204th (index 52.36). Abu Dhabi was recognized as the safest city in the world (UAE; index 89.39), followed by Doha (Qatar; index 88.31) and Quebec (Canada; index 85.22).

Numbeo repeatedly ranked Nizhny Novgorod; for example in January 2019, the city became the Russian leader in terms of quality of life, beating Toronto, Brussels, Madrid and Los Angeles. Nizhny Novgorod is a popular tourist destination; thousands of people from different countries visit it every year. It hosts more than thirty higher education institutions, including Lobachevsky University and a branch of Higher School of Economics.
