Russian Universities Among the Best for Physics, Mathematics

QS World University Rankings by Subject 2019 have been released.

Britain’s Quacquarelli Symonds surveyed universities across the world in 48 different subject areas. Russian universities were listed for 34 subjects. Seventeen were ranked for physics and astronomy. Lomonosov Moscow State University tops the Russian league table at 26th position. It is followed by Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology, National Research Nuclear University MEPhI and Novosibirsk State University in the group 51-100. Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology, Novosibirsk State University and Higher School of Economics were ranked for Mathematics in the group 101-150. Russian universities also showed good results in engineering fields. National University of Science and Technology MISIS was placed 42nd for Mineral and Mining Engineering and got into the group 101-150 for Materials Science. ITMO National Research University advanced to the group 101-150 for Computer Science and Information Systems.

Higher School of Economics made it into the group 51-100 for Economics and Econometrics, Politics and International Studies and Sociology and into the group 101-150 for Accounting and Finance, Business and Management Studies, Education and Training, History, Linguistics and Philosophy. National Research Tomsk State University was ranked for Modern Languages in the same group.

QS Rankings by Subject rely on four performance indicators. Academic reputation is the key criteria based on expert opinion of individuals in the higher education space across the world. In 2019, more than 83 academic staff were polled. Novosibirsk State University, Higher School of Economics and National University of Science and Technology were among the top five Russian universities by this indicator. Among the other criteria are employer reputation, research citations by paper and h-index (productivity and impact of the published work of a scientist).
