The new Emerging Economies University Rankings 2021 of the British magazine Times Higher Education has been published. Traditionally, THE assesses the quality of higher education in countries with rapidly developing economies. This year the list includes 48 Russian universities. For comparison, last year there were 39, and back in 2013 – only 2.

MIPT took 11th place and became the second among Russian universities. This is the result of a high level of education the university provides and its active research. Among the graduates of Phystech are world-renowned scientists, including several Nobel Prize winners.

“This year a new laboratory will be established under the academic supervision of Nobel prize winner Konstantin Novoselov in the Center of Photonics and 2D Materials. During the last five years, we have already created 20 laboratories in cooperation with the leading institutes of the Russian Academy of Science. And together with new laboratories, we are launching new educational programmes,” says Vitaly Bagan, Vice-Rector for Research at the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology.

HSE University, NRNU MEPhI, SPbPU, ITMO University, TSU, NUST MISIS and NSU took strong positions in the top hundred.

THE Emerging Economies University Rankings rates universities according to 13 criteria. These include education quality, international communication and innovation. Much attention is paid to the evaluation of a university's research activity. Already, this is the second world ranking in 2021, in which Russian universities showed excellent results.
