On March 3, 2021, the British company Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) published its annual ranking by subject. The study evaluated 1,029 educational centres around the world, including 40 from Russia, which is 20 times more than that of 2013.

The top 10 Russian universities include HSE University, Ural Federal University, Novosibirsk State University, Tomsk State University, Kazan Federal University, RUDN University, Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University and Tomsk Polytechnic University.

HSE University made a record performance this year taking positions in 18 individual subject rankings out of 51 and in 4 broad subject areas out of 5. This year, HSE achieved excellent results and entered the top 50 in several profiles: Politics and International Relations, Social Sciences and Management and Sociology . For international students, the university offers numerous programmes of various directions, both technical and humanitarian, as well as online courses and seasonal schools of varying duration and intensity.

UrFU is one of the oldest educational organizations in Russia, which annually takes leading positions in international rankings. In QS-2021, the university entered the first hundred in the Petroleum Engineering, Social Policy and Management in the Hotel and Leisure Industry subject rankings. UrFU is known as an education centre for training highly qualified professionals in the industrial, scientific, technological and social-humanitarian spheres, that pays special attention to the development of students' soft skills and project-based experience.

NSU leads about 250 technical and humanitarian programmes developed especially for foreigners. Based on the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the university has a powerful research platform and high-tech laboratories. That allowed NSU to take a confident position in the first hundred of the best educational centres in the world in several subjects: Physics and Astronomy for the sixth time, Oil and Gas Business and Natural Sciences. The university also entered the top 200 in Chemistry for the fourth time, which makes it a leader among Russian universities in this subject.

TSU took positions in 13 subject rankings at once making it the sixth in the Russian group. TSU was included in the Mathematics and Philosophy lists for the first time. This is a result of the university's active development in these areas. Recently, it has launched a philosophical laboratory and a Regional Scientific and Educational Mathematical Center and developed collaborations with the global academic community and international scientific journals. TSU also received notable positions in rankings by following subjects: Physics and Astronomy, Informatics and Information Technologies, Linguistics, Archeology, Modern Languages, English Language and Literature, Chemistry, Art and Humanities, etc.

KFU has been accepting international applicants for over 40 years. During this time, over 750 educational programmes created specifically for them. This year the university is present in 13 subject rankings: Oil and Gas Engineering, English Language and Literature, Modern Languages, Computer Science and Information Systems, etc.

ITMO is one of the most popular among foreign students. Three years after its first appearance in the QS World University Rankings, the university has already entered the top 100 in Computer Science and is now represented in 7 broad subjects, including Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace and Industrial Engineering, Physics and Astronomy, and Materials Science.

TPU became the Russian group leader in the Oil and Gas Business subject and the twenty-third globally. The University also entered the Mathematics subject ranking for the first time. Polytech is actively developing programmes in oilfield chemistry, machine learning in geology and field development and currently offers over 80 educational programmes to foreigners.

This year, RUDN University showed one of the best results. Compared to last year, it climbed to a position more than 100 points higher in Social Sciences and Management, Humanities and Arts and Mathematics subjects. This is an enormous achievement because the university was first included in the QS only in 2019.

MIPT is a leading technical university not only in Russia but also in the world taking positions among the top 100 in Physics, Mathematics and Natural Sciences subjects. This is a result of active development over the past 7 years.
