The city has launched preparations for a big sport event.

Yekaterinburg has won hosting rights for the World Summer Universiade in 2023. Russia will organise world summer student games for the second time; the first were held in Kazan in 2013. In 2019, Krasnoyarsk hosted a winter universiade. Preparations for student games in Yekaterinburg are underway already. Sport competition areas have been selected; sport facilities are being designed and their construction is due to begin soon. Plans are in place to build a rhythmic gymnastics centre, a sambo palace, a water sports palace, an ice arena, a judo palace, a tennis court and an universiade village. Later it will be converted into a student campus of the Ural Federal University with comfortable dormitories and sport infrastructure. According to Yekaterinburg mayor, the university will get dormitories for 10,000 places as well as teaching blocks to accommodate 50,000 to 60,000 students. Also, Yekaterinburg will use existing facilities during the 2023 Universiade including the 2018 World Cup infrastructure and UrFU’s athletics stadium, swimming pool etc.
