Russian universities offer foreigners short programmes.

Russian language and culture summer schools are not the only short programmes offered by Russian universities. Prospective international students can select a short programme in information technologies, robotics, civil engineering, law, economics, history etc.

How to get into a summer school

Choose the course, create a personal account and write to the university designating the programme. It is free. University staff will reply to you within ten days.

Following is a selection of most interesting summer programmes:

Russia - Far East

University: Far Eastern Federal University (FEFU)

City: Vladivostok

Period of study: 6-26 August

Application deadline: 30 April

Language of instruction: English, Russian

Tuition fee: 60,000 rubles (accommodation, training and cultural programme; meals and insurance not included).

You can choose one of the following modules: Russia’s domestic and foreign policy, contemporary Russian documentary or comprehensive sustainable development of Russian Far East. Each module includes a Russian language and culture course. Cultural programme: Vladivostok sightseeing tour, Arsenyev and FEFU museums tours, walking tour to the Novosiltsevskaya Battery and Cape Tobizin, Matryoshka painting master class.

New Financial Technologies under the Condition of Digital Transformation of Economy

University: Siberian Federal University (SibFU)

City: Krasnoyarsk

Tuition fee: 10,000 rubles (education programme, study materials, registration fee, arrival/departure airport transfer, SibFU campus accommodation, full board, cultural and sport programme). The programme targets students who are interested in modern world economy. School participants will discuss global changes in world economy, learn about the latest trends in financial technologies and big economic data operation and have a training session to develop financier and manager skills. Part of the course runs at SibFU; the school then moves to the Politekhnik sport and recreation camp on the shore of the Krasnoyarsk water reservoir.

Future Lawyers: Essential Skills to Success

It is set of courses to develop professional and communication skills of future lawyers and economists. Classes are conducted by professors of Georgetown, Cambridge and Stanford Universities, Institute of Diplomacy and Global Affairs (Athens), Lomonosov Moscow State University and other prestigious universities. The summer school is a mix of interactive lectures and seminars, games, and modelling of legal and economic activities. A tour of the Baltic seaside is planned in free time.

Android Apps Development and Big Data Use

University: National Research Lobachevsky State University of Nizhni Novgorod (UNN)

City: Nizhny Novgorod

Application deadline: 21 May for non-EU residents: 20 June for residents of EU countries (except Britain)

Language of instruction: English

Tuition fee: 45,000 rubles

Admission requirements: prospective students having basic knowledge of mathematical analysis, programming (Java, HML) with English language proficiency level at B2 or higher. Students will learn to design and structure Android apps, prepare them for publication on Google Play, use the Hadoop eco system, and work with Big Data services. The school includes studies of the Russian language and the history and culture of Russia and Nizhny Novgorod.

HSE International Summer University

University: Higher School of Economics (HSE)

City: Moscow, St Petersburg, Nizhny Novgorod

Period of study: 20 June – 20 August

Application deadline: 15 April

Language of instruction: English

Tuition fee: $180 per 1 ECTS credit (if a student chooses the programme which gets at least 3 ECTS credit points and $150 (for more than three ECTS credits). For example, four ECTS credit points are given for a 32-hour economics programme. Consequently, the programme costs $600. HSE partner universities students are eligible for a 20-percent discount. Tuition fee covers the cost of education programme, visa support, cultural events and a city sightseeing tour.

The Summer University offers many English courses (up 40 class hours) focused on international relations, political analysis, law, mathematics, informatics, urban construction, business and management etc. The programme targets bachelor’s/master’s students and graduates.

Admission requirements: senior undergraduate, specialist, masters or PhD students with English proficiency level at B2 or higher. Students will be introduced to the basics of design, civil engineering and facility operation using various digital economy technologies. Some of the course subjects are Building Information Modelling, Additive Manufacturing and Automated Building Control Systems. The course includes practice classes.

Cultural programme: boat city tour for students, excursion to the Hermitage, pub quiz in central St. Petersburg, picnic at the seashore of the Gulf of Finland, visit to the Baltika Brewery/Coca-Cola factory. Pushkin and Peterhof tours are at extra cost.

Engineering Computer Modelling

University: National Research Nuclear University (MEPhI)

Students will gain knowledge in modelling physical processes and learn to use modern simulation software such as MCU, FlowVision, StarCCM+, Fidesys an Logos. The programme includes lectures, practice classes and consultations. Students will engage in a team modelling project at the end of training.

Robotics and Mechatronics Summer School

Professional IT Technology and Automation Summer School

University: South Ural State University (SUSU)

Tuition is free: accommodation at university dormitory: 20 euros. Sightseeing tours: 50 to 150 euros.

Admission requirements: engineering students (automation, mechanical engineering, computer science and technologies). The programme covers engineering and related disciplines including cybersecurity, process control theory, the basics of electronic engineering, Internet of Things and business communication in engineering. Students can solidify their knowledge at programming and machine setting seminars. A certificate is issued upon course completion.

Cultural and entertainment programme: visits to Cossack Log Cabin Museum, Gardarika historical reenactment park, Husky Centre, Russian dishes master class.

Doing Business in Russia: Diversity of International Business Models

Tuition fee: 400 euros (50-euro early bird discount till 15 April) Covers education programme, accommodation, visa support, airport transfer, coffer breaks and meals on study days, welcome and farewell drinks and cultural programme.

Admission requirements: senior undergraduate/masters students and graduates who are interested in doing business in Russia. Classes are focused on Russian and international business models diversity. Participants will study cross-cultural aspects of life and work in Russia, the legal norms of launching business, the basics of management and other useful disciplines. After hearing a course of lectures, students prepare their own startup projects which will be assessed by a jury.

Digital Engineering

The program provides students with a challenging task to create a concept prototype of a raw idea from scratch in 15 days of intense group workflow. It includes lectures on digital fabrication, methods of rapid prototyping; CAD/CAM workshops, electronics and programming. Entertainment: St Petersburg sightseeing tour, quiz.

Requirements for participants: a basic understanding of digital circuits and sequential logic; English proficiency level at B2 or higher.
