The Centre for World University Rankings (CWUR) has published the 2019-2020 edition.

The CWUR study covered 18,000 higher education centres. Russia was represented by 19 universities, up 14 from the previous year. Seven of them got into the top 1000. Lomonosov Moscow State University at number 222 led the Russian league. It was followed by Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology and St Petersburg State University. Novosibirsk State University, National Research Nuclear University MEPhI, Higher School of Economics and National Research Tomsk State University were among the top 1000. CWUR also listed Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University, ITMO University, Kazan Federal University, Ural Federal University, National Research Tomsk Polytechnic University, National University of Science and Technology MISIS, Lobachevsky University, Far Eastern Federal University, Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia, Siberian Federal University etc.

CWUR, a leading organisation focused on improving education quality, has been publishing the academic ranking of universities since 2012. It differs from other world rankings in that it does not rely on surveys and university data submissions. CWUR grades universities on such criteria as the quality of education (measured by the number of a university's alumni who have won major international awards), alumni employment (the number of a university's alumni who have held CEO positions at the world's top companies), quality of faculty, high quality publications and citations.
