Times Higher Education surveyed world cities with the largest number of prestigious universities.
The study highlights the cities with the higher education centres that made THE’s top 200 and top 500 in overall rankings. Moscow placed 7th as a host city of four universities in THE’s top 500: Higher School of Economics, Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology, National Research Nuclear University MEPhI and Lomonosov Moscow State University. The other Russian universities in THE top 500 institutional excellence survey are Kazan Federal University, National Research Tomsk Polytechnic University, Novosibirsk State University and Saint Petersburg State University. London placed 1st on the THE list of 25 best student cities; Barcelona, Berlin, Frankfurt, Milan, Chicago, Los Angeles and Tokyo shared the 7th place with Moscow. Moscow outranked Stockholm, Atlanta, Shanghai, Beijing, Singapore and Montreal.
In 2017, Moscow placed 39th among the best student cities in QS rankings. The Russian capital also takes a high position in World Tourism Rankings. In 2016, it was in the top 50 European travel destinations.
