Russian Universities Among the Best in ARWU Ranking

ShanghaiRanking Consultancy published the results of annual survey.

Experts assessed more than 1,800 higher education centres across the world. Previously, the ranking agency published a list of 500 universities; in 2019, the list expanded to 1,000. Russia is represented by 11 higher education centres. Lomonosov Moscow State University tops the Russian league at 87th position, followed by St Petersburg State University in the 301-400 group. The 401-500 group includes Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology and Novosibirsk State University. Another Russian engineering university - National Research Nuclear University MEPhI - was ranked for the first time (601-700 group). Ural Federal University was in the 701-800 group, ITMO University, Kazan Federal University, National University of Science and Technology MISIS and National Research Tomsk State University in the 801-900 group and Higher School of Economics in the 900-1000 group.

The Academic Ranking of World Universities is among the most prestigious in the world. ARWU experts rely on such criteria as the number of alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals, number of highly cited researchers, number of articles published in journals of Nature and Science etc.
