Entering the Academic Ranking of World Universities, also known as Shanghai Ranking is admittedly a challenge.

In 2020, ARWU’s top 1000 higher education centres included Lomonosov Moscow State University, St Petersburg State University and Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology. ARWU also ranked Novosibirsk State University, National Research Nuclear University MEPhI, Ural Federal University, Higher School of Economics, National Research Tomsk State University, Kazan Federal University, and National University of Science and Technology MISIS. Many Russian universities have kept their last year positions while Higher School of Economics has moved up 100 slots. In a recent ranking by subject, ARWU listed HSE for seven subject areas.

ARWU relies on several metrics including the number of university researchers’ papers published in top journals, citation ratio and awards won by successful graduates. ARWU has been published since 2003; over the past five years, the number of listed Russian universities has increased from two to eleven.
