Overall, 59 domestic universities were ranked for 29 subject areas.

Entering Academic Rankings of World Universities is a big challenge, as ARWU only ranks the best universities that pursue active research. Russian universities appear in ARWU rankings every year and even improve their standing: for example ARWU ranked 17 Russian higher education centres in 2020, up two from last year.

Universities are ranked in 54 subjects across Life Sciences, Engineering, Natural Sciences, Medical Sciences and Social Sciences. Russian universities were listed for 29 subject areas. Most often, they are ranked for physics, materials science and engineering, mathematics, nanoscience and nanotechnology and earth sciences. Lomonosov Moscow State University was ranked for 12 subject areas and ITMO University for seven; the latter was also in the 76-100 group for automation and control. National University of Science and Technology MISIS is in the top 100 for metallurgical engineering and National Research Tomsk Polytechnic University in the top 100 for mechanical engineering.

Higher School of Economics was ranked for seven subject areas and appears in the 101-200 group for mathematics, political sciences and social sciences. Aside from HSE, the 101-200 group included National Research Tomsk State University for metallurgy and National Research Nuclear University MEPhI, Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology and Novosibirsk State University for physics.

The study covers 4,000 universities across the world and relies on several metrics such as number of papers published in top journals, citation radio, international collaboration and awards won by university staff.
