2016 league tables were published.

One more Russian university, Novosibirsk State University, joined the Academic Ranking of World Universities (in the 401-500 group). Moscow State University traditionally holds a high rank (87th), while St. Petersburg State came out in the 301-400 group.

The ranking has been published for 13 years; MSU has been featured in it since 2004, SPSU – since 2012. By the way, five Russian universities (including the ones mentioned above) are featured in ARWU rankings by subject.

ARWU is considered one of the most conservative and authoritative rankings. Higher Education Institute of Shanghai Jiao Tong University conducts its review every year. Out of 2,000 shortlisted universities, 1,200 are ranked and only 500 are featured in the final ranking.

Criteria used for ranking include research output, number of staff and faculty holding Nobel Prizes etc. Russian universities are regularly featured in all leading education rankings. Learn more here.
