More Russian universities have appeared on the list.

Spain’s Cybermetrics presents Webometrics Ranking of World Universities semiannually. The study shows how well this or that university is represented on the Internet. The list is updated in January and July. The latest study focused on the web presence of 30,000 higher education institutions across the world; of those 12,000 were listed, including 359 Russian higher education centres, up six from January 2020.

The top 1000 included 12 Russian universities: Lomonosov Moscow State University, St Petersburg State University, Higher School of Economics, Novosibirsk and Tomsk State Universities, Peter the Great St Petersburg Polytechnic University, National Research Nuclear University MEPhI, Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology, Kazan Federal University, Tomsk Polytechnic University, Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia and Ural Federal University. The Russian league table has seen minor changes since January 2020: National Research Nuclear University MEPhI and Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology swapped places, ITMO University dropped out and Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia and Ural Federal University appeared in the table.

Cybermetrics researchers rely on several criteria with special focus on the volume and quality of web content published by universities on their own websites and elsewhere.
