“Expert” Analytical Centre Rankings: Best Universities for Research and Inventions

The survey was focused on Russian universities research and publication activities.

The Analytical Centre releases two rankings a year assessing Russian universities’ research output and inventions.

Research is evaluated by the number of publications and their quality. In 2020, the survey was conducted across 21 fields (16 broad subject areas and five narrow subject areas) including humanities, engineering and computer sciences, life sciences, mathematics, physics and astronomy, chemistry, medicine etc. Most publications by Russian universities are found in the fields of engineering and materials science.

In the composite rankings by subject areas Moscow State University placed first; it is followed by Petersburg State University, Higher School of Economics, Novosibirsk State University and ITMO University.

Inventions are evaluated by analysing universities’ patenting. Over the past five years, Russian universities have patented 15,000 inventions. The leaders are National Research Tomsk State University, Kazan Federal University and National University of Science and Technology MISIS.
