The university launched a new English medium PhD programme.

Optical and Optoelectronic Devices and Systems is a new English-taught programme launched by the Saint Petersburg Electrotechnical University "LETI” this year. It targets bachelor’s and specialist degree holders focused on modern photonics, informational optics and optic and optoelectronic devices and systems. Postgraduates will engage in research on one of the tracks such as Laser Technologies in Instrument Engineering, Silicon-Based Solar Modules, 3D Laser Scanning Technology and Virtual Reality, Photophysics of Media with Nanoobjects etc. PhD students have access to LETI’s modern laboratories. They can also take a course in a foreign language (German, French or Russian) and have teaching practice.

Tuition fee is 220,000 rubles ($,3380) a year. Length of study is four years. Requirements: specialist/master’s degree in the appropriate or related field, English proficiency at Intermediate or higher. Applicants have to take part in a portfolio contest which takes into account the degree Grade Point Average, author’s abstract, publications in scientific journals, participation in conferences, workshops, student competitions/Olympiad winner or participant certificates. Established in in 1931, Department of Photonics is one of the oldest and best known units of the university. Zhores Alfyorov, who won the Nobel Prize in physics in 2000 is among the outstanding LETI’s Department of Photonics graduates.
