More International Students Are Choosing to Study in Russia

The most popular are engineering, medical and economical professions.

According to the latest statistics from the Ministry of Education and Science of Russia, the number of foreign students studying in Russia in the 2014-2015 academic year increased by 17.2% (26,900 people) compared to last year. Most students came from Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Ukraine and China.

The number of foreign students enrolled in government-funded programs also increased – by 2% (38.3% – an improvement on the 36.3% recorded in 2013/2014). Over the last 10 years this indicator has increased by 15.5%.

Most international students enroll in Bachelor’s programmes. The most popular are engineering and technology (21.7% of students), medicine (17.2%), and economics (15.9%).

In the academic year 2014/2015, the majority of foreign students studied in the Russian People’s Friendship University (7,900 people), St. Petersburg State University (4,400) and St. Petersburg Polytechnic University (3,600).
