Russian Programmers Are Second to None
Russian universities students won a world programming championship.
International Collegiate Programming Contest (ICPC) 2019 has ended in Porto, Portugal. It is the most prestigious IT student competition. In 2019, it gathered 135 teams from across the world. Lomonosov Moscow State University students won the Cup beating the U.S. and Japanese teams. Other Russian teams showed good results too. Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology and Higher School of Economics won the bronze. Ten Russian universities made it to the finals, including the teams from ITMO University and Ural Federal University.
The ICPC, held since 1977, involves thousands of students from all over the world. In the finals, young programmers are given five hours to solve complicated problems. The victory goes to the team that solves the largest number of problems in the shortest possible time. It is not the first time the Russian team became ICPC leader. Domestic universities teams have scored ten victories since 2000. ITMO University has won seven ICPC Cups, a record in the championship history.
ICPC 2019 brought success to Russian students and Russia in general as Moscow got the title of ICPC 2020 capital, selected from among the competing bids of Shanghai, Sydney and Orlando. Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology will host ICPC 2020. Seven years ago, the university launched the Moscow Workshop ICPC project to train Russian and international students for programming competitions. Over this time, students of 193 universities from 55 countries have taken part in the training. Eleven of 12 medal winners and 51 teams trained at MIPT made it to the ICPC finals 2019.
