Every year, Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) assesses the quality of educations provided by the world’s leading universities.

All basic fields of study are factored in. The QS by-subject ranking started six years ago and every year more and more Russian universities have been listed. As of now (2016), forty-two disciplines stand represented in the QS tables.

Seventeen Russian universities are among the current leaders in 29 subject areas, whereas last year only 10 were ranked. Nine of the universities now enjoying a rating by QS are members of Project 5-100: HSE, KFU, MEPhI, MIPT, NSU, SPbPU, TSU, TPU and UrFU.

Russia’s leading university – Lomonosov Moscow State University – is in the top 100 in all 12 subject areas, ranking the highest (17th) in linguistics. St. Petersburg State is the second best Russian university. Another six schools are in the top 100 in at least one of the ranked subject areas. The assessment criteria included the following: the university’s academic reputation, its citation index, academic impact, and its reputation among employers.
