15 Russian Universities in U.S. News 2018 Best Global Universities Rankings

U.S. News & World Report released new overall and subject rankings of the world’s best universities.

Experts have surveyed 1,250 universities across 74 countries. Lomonosov Moscow State University, placed 267th, leads domestic higher education institutions; it is followed by National Research Nuclear University MEPhI (438th). Novosibirsk State University, Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology and National Research Tomsk State University have improved their positions from last year. NSU moved up 64 slots to 471st position, MIPT rose by 100 slots to 534th place and TSU advanced by 237 positions to place 701st. Following are the Russian universities listed by U.S. News & World Report for the first time in overall rankings: Kazan Federal University, National Research Lobachevsky State University of Nizhni Novgorod, National University of Science and Technology, National Research Tomsk Politechnic UniversityPeter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University, Higher School of Economics, ITMO National Research University and Ural Federal University.

Russian universities also appeared in U.S. News Best Global Universities rankings by six subjects: maths, physics, chemistry, engineering, materials science, social sciences and health care. MGU was ranked for the first five subjects entering the top 100 for physics and maths. NSU and MEPhI were listed in the top 100 for physics, taking 88th and 90th places, respectively. The top 200 for mathematics included SPbPU (87th), HSE (144th) and NSU (193rd). In addition to MGU, the rankings for materials science showed MISiS (220th), National Research Tomsk Polytechnic University (375th) and UrFU (395th). The rankings for chemistry include NSU (286th), TSU (532nd), KFU (571st) and MIPT (578th). SPbPU and NSU appeared in the rankings for engineering (561st and 587th places, respectively), and HSE was listed at 343rd position for social sciences and health care.
