The top 1000 include 11 Russian universities, with Lomonosov Moscow State University leading the Russian league. MSU is followed by Saint Petersburg State University, Novosibirsk State University, Higher School of Economics, ITMO University, Tomsk State University, Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University, National Research Nuclear University MEPhI, Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology, Kazan Federal University and Tomsk Polytechnic University.

Madrid-based Cybometrics Lab is a research group of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), the country’s counterpart of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Webometrics Rankings are published biannually, in January and July. The study’s objective is to encourage higher education centres to publish research information and promote open access for students. Experts rely on several critiria, the most important one is the average number of external links to a given university website. This indicator makes up 50 percent of an instituion’s total value. Among other criteria are number of the most cited papers (35%), number of citations from top authors (10%) and the number of webpages of the main webdomain of the institution (5%).
