A future philologist from Tyumen State University took the 1st Place in an intellectual competition.

The Tomsk region has hosted the Russian language Olympiad “Time to Learn Russia” for more than 10 years. Its objective is to consolidate international students and support their interest in the Russian language and culture. The competition comprises two stages. The elimination round takes place on universities’ premises.

In 2020, students of five Tomsk-based universities got to the finals. Alireza Gorbani from Iran was the top scorer. He is a 3rd year student at Tomsk State University’s Philology Faculty. Though his Russian is not bad at all, he acknowledged that he had found Olympiad problems difficult. They included a lexical-grammatical test (Level B1 - B2), listening comprehension and a description of a video segment.

An Olympiad is not just a way to show one’s knowledge. Students communicate, make acquaintances, sing songs in Russian, dance and recite poems. The competition was held online this year but this was not a problem to competitors’ showing their skills.

Tomsk, a student city, hosts six state universities. The best known are National Research Tomsk State University and National Research Tomsk Polytechnic University. More information on TSU and TPU can be found in the respective university sections.
