Russian Universities Students Mark Victory Day
Universities across Russia hold events dedicated to the victory in the Great Patriotic War.
9 May is a special date for Russia which marks the victory over Nazi Germany in 1945. On the eve of the holiday, universities arrange theme events involving Russian and international students. Young people remember WWII soldiers’ feats, honour war veterans and hold rallies. Kazan Federal University students laid flowers at the Monument to the Unknown Soldier, shared WWII memories of their relatives, recited war poems in Russian, Ukrainian, Tajik and Tatar languages. Tomsk Polytechnic University and Siberian Federal University students prepared a show for WWII veterans and homefront workers. In addition, cadets from SibFU Military Engineering Institute arranged an exhibition of military hardware and ran a history quiz for schoolchildren and students.
Far Eastern Federal University hosted the Immortal Regiment exhibition devoted to WWII veterans, a V-Day rally, a athletic race and a music show called “I remember, I’m proud!” Some 140 dance couples performed the Victory Waltz in front of the main building of South Ural State University. I.M. Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University students offered their best wishes to WWI veterans on the occasion of Victory Day, gave them St George ribbons and flowers and ran a theatrical performance for them. On 8 May, National Research Nuclear University MEPhI students visited the scenic Kolomenskoye museum where they learnt about the protection of architectural monuments in wartime. After the lecture, students tried some basic military training such as shelter half pitching and disassembly, rolling a trench coat and filling up a carryall bag.
Many Russian higher education centres including Lobachevsky University, Samara University, National University of Science and Technology MISIS, FEFU and others held the Victory Dictation test based on the Great Patriotic War timeline. The event was supported in Russia, former Soviet republics and European and Asian countries. The Immortal Regiment action take place across the world for the seventh time as people march along streets carrying portraits of their relatives who participated in the war. In 2019, residents of more than 80 countries will join the Immortal Regiment march.
