Graduate School of Economics and Management

GSEM is one of the key centers for education in the fiield of economics and management. It is the largest UrFU Institute.

GSEM actively develops, expands international relations, implements joint scientific research projects in collaboration with business society, and programs of professional retraining for partner companies.

GSEM includes 7 departments. The academic staff consists of 428 lecturers, including 57 Doctors of Science, 202 Associate Professors and 203 Candidates of Science.

GSEM offers programs for Bachelors, Masters, postgraduate students, MBA programs. GSEM is one of the first Institutes of UrFU, which successfully implements Double Degree programs: “International Economics" in cooperation with Humboldt University (Berlin, Germany); "International Management" in coopertaion with Lille 1 (Lille, France).

GSEM members in European Foundation for Management Development. The list of participating members includes over 750 educations, business, non-commercial, consult member-organizations in 80 countries. In 2015 GSEM received a prestigious accreditation of EPAS (European Program Accreditation System). UrFU became one of five Russian universities, which received such a high recognition. The program “International Economics and Business” was accredited by 2018. GSEM is implementing a Master's Program "International Financial Management" jointly with the international company PricewaterhouseCoopers. Within the frames of the program the students can obtain a prestigious international certificate in the field of financial management ACCA.

Institute of Chemical Engineering

Institute of Chemical Engineering trains highly qualified specialists for chemical, petrochemical and pharmaceutical industries. Bachelor studies are carried out in three areas: Chemical Engineering, Energy and Resource Saving in Chemical Engineering, and Biotechnology.

Fundamental and practical knowledge gained allow graduates finding employment at enterpises-pharmaceutical manufacturers, research institutes, chemical enterprises.

Master students get more in-depth knowledge in the fields of chemistry and biotechnology and actively carry out research; they can take part in unique development of new antiviral drugs, vitamins, biologically active substances carried out by the Institute’s researchers.

Institute of Chemical Engineering offers one of the most successful and demanded Master Programs in English in the field of Food Biotechnology.

All faculty members of the Institute have doctoral degrees. Professors and experts from foreign universities in China, Austria, Belgium, England, SA regularly visit the Institute to deliver lectures.


Institute of Civil Engineering and Architecture

The institute trains high-qualification specialists in engineering and construction. The most famous graduate is Russia's first President Boris Yeltsin.

Institute of Civil Engineering and Architecture covers 2 key directions: “Architecture” and “Construction Engineering”. The Institute offers programs of all levels, including a Master Program in English “Building Design for Sustainable Development”. The istitute comprises 9 academic departments and 168 lecturers, with nearly half of them being PhD degree-holders. Students can also attend lectures delivered by international professors.

The educational process is facilitated with the use of up-to-date electronic educational resources, as well as online courses in a range of disciplines and distance learning technologies within certain educational trajectories.

International projects help keep up with the global educational trends. The Master program “Technologies of Water Supply and Discharge” was created in collaboration with the EU experts from University of Genoa, as well as Slovak University of Technology, Middlesex University. UrFU ICEA holds membership in the international association EUCEET and leads the Ural division of the Construction Engineering Universities International Association.

Institute of Fundamental Education

The institute of Fundamental Education was created with the view of improving the quality of basic training in those areas of knowledge that form the basis for students’ professional activity.

The key majors offered by the Institute are linguistics and information technologies (fundamental and applied computer science).

The Institute puts an emphasis on active international cooperation. It develops connections with the leading European educational institutions such as Munich Technical University, German Institute for International Pedagogical Research, Dresden University of Technology, Johannes Kepler University. In the context of linguistic educational program, the Institute cooperates with the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD); the students always have chance to improve their German language and take part in a scholarship program. In addition, DAAD lecturers visit the Institute on a regular basis. Dozens of students participate in exchange programs annually.


Institute of Natural Sciences and Mathematics

The institute trains specialists in a wide range of areas in the natural sciences field, which also includes the major named “Geodesy and Remote Sensing”, which is unique to the Urals, as well as “Hydrometeorology”, a major launched to the order of Roshydromet department in the Ural Federal District.

Engineering majors appeared in the Institute as development of practice-oriented fundamental education. Objects of professional activity of engineering graduates are information systems and technologies, their software, designing methods, debugging, production and operation of hardware and software of information systems in geodesy and cartography.

The institute of Natural Sciences and Mathematics offers 16 Master’s programs, including a network program in biology, which involves student exchange with other universities of Russia, such as Siberian Federal University, Northern (Arctic) Federal University, Southern Federal University, Crimean Federal University. Doctoral students of physics can participate on double degree programs with international universities.

The institute also has several laboratories headed and cooperated with by international scientists. Currently, work is in progress to create a Center for Fundamental Biotechnology and Bioengineering, which is to be headed by Kazimir Strazhalka, a renowned researcher in the field.

Institute of New Materials and Technologies

The INM&T is the largest center of engineering education in the Ural region, combining fundamental training and practical interdisciplinary approach. Graduates of the Institute are able to create new materials with unique properties, as well as manage large industrial enterprises.

INM&T includes a school of basic engineering education and an engineering school of new industry, unites the departments of engineering, metallurgy and metals science, construction materials science, the higher engineering school, 21 departments and 9 enterprise-based departments.

Apart from the traditional majors such as materials science, metallurgy and mechanical engineering, the institute is implementing modern, in-demand basic educational programs in Information Systems and Technologies, Automation of Technological Processes & Productions, Mechatronics and Robotics, Innovative Development of High-Technology Productions.

Modern methods of teaching and educational technologies are actively used in the educational process. Since the launch of the university development program and the program for enhancement of international competitiveness, the institute was able to equip its laboratories with state-of-the-art technological equipment, including that with numerical software control; modern software has been purchased for the automation of production processes.

The Institute maintains numerous contacts with international colleagues. There is an International Academic Council, including leading international scientists from such countries as Hungary, Israel, and other European countries. Students of the INM&T have the possibility to visit lectures by foreign professors both during their visits to the university and remotely with the help of modern information technologies.

Institute of Open Educational Technologies

Institute of Open Educational Technologies is a new-generation academic unit targeted at implementation of distance programs. The Institute opens up wide opportunities for those students who are not able to attend on-campus classes for any reason.

Distance studies are available in 14 directions at Bachelor level, including such highly demanded programs as Civil Engineering, Informatics, Power Engineering, HR management, Economics etc.

One of relatively new initiatives of the Institute is Master training delivered in a distance mode. Currently there are three Master Programs available as distant ones – Mechanical Engineering, Organization of research-intensive production, Public and Municipal Administration.

E-learning allows students getting the most from the experience of the best lecturers and experts regardless of their location and even taking several programs simultaneously. Modern electronic information and educational environment makes distance learning available and transparent.


Institute of Physical Education, Sport and Youth Policy

IPESYP is aimed at training high-level specialists, coaches, teachers and experts in promotion of sports & healthy lifestyle and marketing. Educational activity and research of the Institute covers international youth policy, sports, sociocultural service, tourism and recreational activities.

Academic stuff includes PhDoctors and Candidates of science, Masters of sports and Honored Coaches of the Russian Federation and of International level.

Many outstanding athletes had graduated from IPESYP. Among them are Sergey Chepikov, Olympic champion in biathlon, Anton Shipulin, Olympic champion in relay race, Heydar Mamedaliev, world champion in GraecoRoman wrestling, etc.

IPESYP is in constant process of development. IPESYP offers a range of Master’s Programs, including one in English: "High Performance Sport". The facilities are also constantly being improved.


Institute of Physics and Technology

The Institute of Physics and Technology comprises 14 departments. Their educational activity and research can be divided into 3 major directions: physico-technical, physico-chemical, social sciences and humanities. The Institute’s research priorities are nuclear physics, nanotechnologies, instrument engineering.

Students’ research activity is conducted at 80 laboratories with the most technologically advanced equipment – cyclotrons, accelerators and precision instruments.

The Institute educate specialists in unique areas, in particular – nuclear sphere. IPT graduates are employed at the largest Russian and even international enterprises – Rosatom, Gazprom, various IT-companies.


Institute of Public Administration and Entrepreneurship

The Institute of Public Administration and Entrepreneurship conducts educational and research activities in directions connected with management, administration, entrepreneurship, marketing and public relations.

The main objective of the Institute’s activity is to train highly qualified specialists – managers, administrative workers, branding, marketing and public relations experts.

The Institute is holding the 3rd position in the list of the best centers for business-education in the Ural Federal District. One of the competitive advantages that allow the Institute to reach these high positions is the close interaction with business and governmental structures: the students undergo trainings in the country’s leading companies, and 85% of their research activity are actual management development projects.

Since 2007 the institute has been the base for a unique project – student “Incubator” of innovative projects in social and business spheres. Besides, the Institute has its own Centre for Youth Entrepreneurship and School of Entrepreneurship for school-students – future students of the Institute.

The institute of Public Administration and Entrepreneurship is a member of such prestigious Russian and international organizations as CEEMAN (Central and East European Management Development Association), Russian Association of Business Education, and Global University Network for Innovation.


Institute of Radioelectronics and Information Technologies

Institute of Radioelectronics and Information Technologies is a large academic center, which train students and conduct scientific research in the field of radio engineering, communication and control systems.

The number of students is more than 2 200; the academic staff includes 254 lecturers, including 14 academicians and corresponding members of RAS, 27 doctors, 127 candidates of sciences.

One of the priorities of the Institute is cooperation with companies-employers. That allows students of the Institute pass internships at the largest enterprises of the city Yekaterinburg and the Sverdlovsk region. Thanks to fruitful cooperation, it is possible to maintain the high level of technical equipment of classes and laboratories. Several hi-tech centers give a base for research projects implemented by the memebers of the staff and students. Such centers include scientific and educational center "Information and telecommunication systems and technologies", Innovation Center CISCO, "Space Monitoring Center", "Center of Electromagnetic Measurements".

The Institute is constantly developing in order to meet the requirements of the global market. One of the most recent divisions of the Institute is Sub-Department of Big Data Analysis and Methods of Video-Analysis, established in collaboration with “Data-center Automatica”.

The students of the Institute do not only receive education of fundamental level, they are actively involved in science, already on the third course of their Bachelor studies they start doing research using the most modern equipment provided by such manufacturers and companies as National Instruments, Rohde&Schwarz, Agilent, Tetronix, Cisco.


Ural Institute of Humanities

All departments of the Ural Institute of Humanities (UIH) are focused on social sciences, humanities and arts. The Institute produces professionals in journalism, history, philology, art studies, etc. It also comprises departments of linguistics, philosophy, psychology, international relations, sociology and political science. Several institutes function within UIH: Institute of Professional Retraining and Further Training, Inter-regional Institute of Social Sciences, as well as Research Institute of Russian Culture. Chinese language and culture are studied at the Confucius Institute, which is also part of UIH.

A large network of research laboratories functions at the Institute. Among them are the International Laboratory for Comparative Study of Tolerance and Recognition, Laboratory of Neuro-cognitive development, Laboratory of Psychophysiology and Psychophysics and others. The structure of the Institute includes the Center for Innovative Humanities and Center for Contemporary Culture. Staff and students organize museum exhibitions and creative projects on a regular basis. The Institute often invites famous writers, journalists and artists to give lectures, seminars and workshops to the students. The UIH scientists regularly win national and intenational grants. The Institute’s alumni community includes renowned cultural workers, writers, politicians. UrFU Rector Victor Koksharov also graduated from the Faculty of History, which is now part of the Institute.

The UIH is an international workspace: a large number of foreign specialists work here, and lectures by foreign experts are held on a regular basis. Students study abroad through international student mobility programs, speak at international conferences and seminars. The Institute successfully implements a number of master's programs entirely in English for foreign students in such areas as Russian studies, political philosophy, personnel management, design, psychology, etc. The world-famous foreign scientists are the scientific leaders of the UIH laboratories.

Ural Power Engineering Institute

The activity of Ural Power Engineering Institute is connected with strategically important field, development of innovations in power engineering. The mission of UPEI is to provide energy sector with highly-qualified personnel, scientific, educational & innovative solutions.

The Institute studies the most important problems of fuel, renewable & nuclear energy, energy saving, machine building, economics in the field of energetics. Educational & scientific resources of the Institute give the students opportunity to obtain profound practical skills and become real specialists ready for the professional activity.

Institute's infrastructure includes unique equipment, for example, simulators of normal working process and emergencies in the power systems.

UPEI has 11 scientific & educational research laboratories, more than 50 specialized stands and installations for scientific and educational work.

UPEI is а base venue for SCO University in the direction "Energetics"; This initiative gives the students an opportunity to participate in internships at the universities of China and universities of other countries of SCO.
