The university admitted 626 students from 44 countries.

As many as 286 foreign nationals enrolled in undergraduate programmes at National Research Nuclear University MEPhI, 21 in specialists programmes, 305 in masters programmes and 14 in PhD programmes. The bulk of foreign nationals came from the Commonwealth of Independent States. Uzbekistan is the top origin country (117 applicants enrolled for bachelor’s and as many for master’s degree, seven for specialist degree and one in doctoral degree), followed by Kazakhstan (63 were admitted to undergraduate programmes, 82 to master’s programmes and two to PhD programmes), and Kyrgyzstan (12 people were admitted to undergraduate programmes, 33 to master’s programmes and two to specialist programmes). Armenia and Belarus accounted for eight of 14 PhD positions. In 2019, MEPhI admitted applicants from 44 countries: Zambia, Bolivia, Mongolia, Tajikistan, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, India, Ukraine, Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Angola, Bangladesh, Bulgaria, Bosnia, Guinea, Egypt, Israel, Indonesia, Jordan, Cambodia, Cameroon, Kenya, Kyrgyzstan, Korea, Laos, Lithuania, Lebanon, Moldova, Nigeria, Paraguay, Senegal, Slovakia, Sudan, Tanzania, Tunis, Turkey, Uganda, Ethiopia etc.

National Research Nuclear University MEPhI is a well-known Russian university which trains nuclear industry specialists. International students mostly select engineering professions related to nuclear power engineering and nuclear technology. The most-in-demand undergraduate programmes were Nuclear Power Engineering and Thermal Physics, Nuclear Physics and Technology and Materials Science. The popular masters programmes were Cybersecurity, Economics, Informatics and Computer Science and Business Informatics. Nuclear Power Plants: Design, Operation and Engineering topped the list of sought-after specialist programmes. PhD students tended to choose Nuclear, Heat and Renewable Energy and Related Technologies.
