Twelve Russian Universities Included in ARWU Subject Rankings

The number of domestic universities on ARWU list has increased four-fold since 2015.

Academic World University Rankings highlighted the world’s top universities by 52 subjects. Lomonosov Moscow State University (MGU) earned ARWU rankings in 14 subjects, with the highest (43rd) position in physics. MGU is followed by Novosibirsk State University (ranked in the 151-200 bracket), National Research Nuclear University MEPhI and Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (ranked in the 201-300 bracket) and Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University and National Research Tomsk State University (ranked in the 401-500 bracket).

Higher School of Economics is in ARWU’s top 100 in social science (ranked in the 51-75 bracket) while National University of Science and Technology MISiS was ranked in the 76-100 bracket in metallurgy. In mathematics, Higher School of Economics is in the 101-150 bracket, Novosibirsk State University in the 201-300 bracket and Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology in the 401-500 bracket.

National Research Tomsk State University is in ARWU’s top 150 in metallurgy; Higher School of Economics is in the top 300 in political science. National Research Tomsk Polytechnic University is included in the 151-200 bracket in Mechanical Engineering, and Higher School of Economics is in the top 300 in economics. Novosibirsk State University is ranked in the 401-500 bracket in chemistry.

ARWU listed 1,409 universities from all over the world by such indicators as research performance, papers indexed in major citation indices, number of articles published in Nature and Science, and alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals.
