17 Russian Universities in THE Rankings 2019

Times Higher Education released a new edition of world university rankings.

The list covers universities from 86 countries; Russia is represented by 17 higher education centres. Lomonosov Moscow State University tops the Russian league table at 199th position. It is followed by the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology in the 251-300 group. The top 500 include Higher School of Economics and National Research Nuclear University MEPhI which improved their positions compared with 2018. HSE moved up to 301-350 from 351-400 and MEPhI boosted its position to 351-400 from 401-500. THE Rankings 2019 placed Russia’s ITMO University, Novosibirsk State University, National Research Tomsk Polytechnic University, and National Research Tomsk State University in the 501-600 group. Kazan Federal University, National University of Science and Technology MISIS, St Petersburg Polytechnic University and Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia which made its first appearance in THE rankings are in the 601-800 group. Samara University and other universities are in the 801-1000 group. Eighteen Russian universities made it into THE’s top 1000. Saint Petersburg Electrotechnical University "LETI” was ranked for the first time. Among other Russian universities are Far Eastern Federal University, Lobachevsky University, Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University, Siberian Federal University and Ural Federal University.

THE methodology is based on several performance indicators including teaching (the learning environment); research (volume, income and reputation) and international outlook (staff, students and research).
