30 Russian Universities in New THE Rankings 2019

Experts assessed universities against socio-economic criteria.

Britain’s Times Higher Education published University Impact Rankings 2019 for the first time. Experts surveyed 462 universities across 76 countries. Russia was represented by 30 higher education centres. The Russian table is led by Altai State University (58th place) and Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University (85th place). The 201-300 category included Immanuel Kant Baltic Federal University, Kazan Federal University, National University of Science and Technology MISIS, Samara University, Saint Petersburg Electrotechnical University “LETI”, National Research Tomsk Polytechnic University etc. Lobachevsky University and National Research Nuclear University MEPhI, South Ural State University were also ranked.

THE used 11 criteria such as good health and well-being (university’s medical research, quality medical education), decent work and economic growth (universities economic research and employment practices, the share of students taking work placements), industry, innovation, and infrastructure and partnership for sustainable development goals (collaboration with other countries). Universities were ranked for each criteria; Russian universities showed good results. For example, Saint Petersburg Electrotechnical University "LETI” placed 37th for decent work and economic growth, followed by Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University (66th) and Novosibirsk State University (91st). National Research Nuclear University MEPhI was ranked 48th, ITMO University 66th, National Research Tomsk Polytechnic University 72nd and South Ural State University 97th for industry, innovation and infrastructure. In the “Partnership for Sustainable Development Goals category” Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University and Immanuel Kant Baltic Federal University topped the Russian league at 41st and 50th positions, respectively.
