39 Russian Universities in THE Rankings

British experts assessed universities across 92 countries.

Britain’s Times Higher Education magazine released a new edition of annual university rankings. Experts assessed nearly 1,400 higher education centres across the world. Russia is represented by 39 universities compared with 35 last year. Lomonosov Moscow State University, placed 189th, tops the Russian table. It is followed by Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology and Higher School of Economics which moved up into the groups 201-250 and 251-300, respectively. The 401-500 group includes ITMO University, National Research Nuclear University MEPhI; Novosibirsk State University, Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University and National Research Tomsk State University are listed in the 501-600 group. THE also ranked Kazan Federal University, National University of Science and Technology MISIS, National Research Tomsk Polytechnic University, Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia, Far Eastern Federal University, Lobachevsky University, Samara University, I.M. Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University, Siberian Federal University, Saint Petersburg Electrotechnical University “LETI”, Ural Federal University, and South Ural State University which appeared in THE league for the first time.

THE is known for publishing the rankings of the world’s top higher education centres. Its experts rely on several criteria such as teaching (30 percent), research (30 percent), research influence (30 percent), international outlook (7.5 percent), and knowledge transfer.

Russian education has many advantages such as a wide range of engineering, humanities, chemistry and biology and medicine professions. Tuition fees are much lower than in Europe or America while the quality of education is high. Also, foreign nationals can take Russian and English medium programmes.
