The number of international students at the university has increased by nearly one-third.

The university currently provides training to 9,654 international students from 106 countries. Kazan Federal University and its branches admitted 3,699 foreign nationals in 2019. A majority of students came from Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and China. Many applicants hail from Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Iran Kyrgyzstan and Iraq. Among other countries of origin were Turkey, Colombia, Syria, Azerbaijan, Ecuador, Indonesia, Egypt, Ukraine, Afghanistan, Yemen and South Korea. In 2019, 2,822 people enrolled in undergraduate programmes, 405 in graduate programmes and 472 in specialist programmes. Economics, Management, International Relations, Linguistics and Tourism were the most popular programmes with prospective international students.

Established in 1804, Kazan Federal University is one of the oldest education centres in Russia. According to 2017/2018 statistics, it is among the top three Russian universities most popular with international applicants.
