International Students Celebrate New Year the Russian Way
Students from foreign countries get to know Russian traditions.
The New Year is the favourite holiday in Russia marked noisily and in a big way, with decorated Christmas trees, mutual gift giving, feasts, songs and dances. Russian universities begin festivities in December; international students take part in traditional New Year shows such as the one held at National Research Tomsk Polytechnic University. It was attended by students from TPU, National Research Tomsk State University and Tomsk State University of Architecture and Building. Overall there were more than 140 international participants from France, Mongolia, China, Vietnam, Indonesia, Egypt, South Africa and other countries. TPU’s New Year show 2018 was based on the Twelve Months fairy tale; international students danced, sang and performed mini-scenes telling about season changes, university studies and life in Tomsk.
New Year show 2018 at Saint Petersburg Electrotechnical University "LETI” featured Father Christmas and Snow Maiden’s journey across different countries; at each destination they were welcomed by international students presenting their national cultures. For example, an American student sang “My Way” and students from Cuba and Ecuador danced bachata. At the end of the show all participants made a wish.
International students of Far Eastern Federal University have celebrated the New Year too. They danced in a ring, participated in games and contests and took pictures with Santa Claus, Snow Maiden and snowman.
