Russia Considering a Test of Russian for International Prospective Students
Basic knowledge of Russian is key to successful university education.
Foreign applicants may soon have to take mandatory exams in Russian. Vladimir Filippov, Rector of People’s Friendship University of Russia, was the first to propose it, and his initiative was supported by Minister of Education and Science Olga Vasilyeva.She believes such a change would be logical, since foreign prospective students in any country need to attest their mastery of language of instruction. It is believed that at first only foreigners studying at preparatory departments will need to take the exam if they plan to apply for Russian-language programs.
No final decision has been made yet, the matter is still being debated by the government. Even if the exam becomes a reality, it will be introduced gradually. First a methodology needs to be developed, assessment criteria and examination procedure need to be stipulated.
