The team that took top places at a Chinese Olympiad had been trained by expert teachers of Russian universities, including MIPT.

Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology has traditionally trained Russian schoolchildren for international academic competitions in engineering subjects such as China’s International Mathematical Olympiad. It is one of the most challenging contests in the world; in 2019, it involved 450 people. The six-member Russian team won five golds and one silver. MIPT Mathematics Department Assistant Professor Pavel Kozhevnikov was among the Russian team mentors. He became a mathematical Olympiad winner as a school student in 1992 and now he coaches the national team. The winners can take part in the International Mathematical Olympiad in St Petersburg in the summer of 2020. It will bring together schoolchildren from more than 100 countries across the world.

MIPT always had a powerful physics and mathematics school. Times Higher Education placed it in the top 50 for physics and in the top 15 for mathematics. The university employs 53 professors and 134 assistance professors. There are eight Novel Prize winners among current and former MIPT teachers. MIPT graduates Andre Geim and Konstantin Novosyolov won the Nobel Prize in 2010.
