Domestic universities achievements in the outgoing year.

Russian universities showed a stronger presence in the 2019 rankings by leading international agencies. ARWU World University Rankings include 11 Russian higher education centres, up seven from 2018, and THE listed 39 Russian universities, up four from the previous year. Twenty-five Russian universities appeared in QS World University Rankings.

Rankings by subject increasingly feature Russian universities, too. Domestic universities traditionally show good results in exact sciences. For example, QS ranked 17 Russian universities in the 51-100 group for Physic and Astronomy including Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (MIPT), National Research Nuclear University MEPhI and Novosibirsk State University (NSU). MIPT, NSU and Higher School of Economics entered the 101-150 group for Mathematics. National University of Science and Technology MISIS was placed 42nd for Mineral and Mining Engineering and listed in the 101-150 group for Materials Science. ITMO University made it into the 101-150 group for Computer Science and Information Systems.

THE Rankings by Subject reflect Russian universities’ achievements in teaching exact sciences. MIPT is placed 45th for Physical Sciences. There are 33 Russian universities in this category overall; the top 200 include MEPhI, NSU and National Research Tomsk State University (TSU). ITMO University and MIPT are placed 74th and 95th, respectively, in THE’s top 100 for Computer Science. ARWU ranked a record seven Russian universities for Physics. These included NSU, MEPhI, MIPT, Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University, TSU etc. MISIS and NSU were in the top 100 for Mineral and Mining Engineering, HSE for Mathematics, National Research Tomsk Polytechnic University for Mechanical Engineering, and ITMO University for Automation and Control.

Russian universities showed good performance in the humanities field: QS put HSE in the 51-100 group for Social Science, Political Science and International Relations, and Economics and Econometrics. Also, HSE is listed in the 51-75 group for Business and Economics. In THE Rankings by Subject, HSE at 94th position led Russian universities for Business and Economics. Kazan Federal University was ranked 94th for Education.
