Russian Universities Train Best International Lawyers

Russian students made it to the final of prestigious competitions in international law.

The teams, including students from the Law Institute of the Immanuel Kant Baltic Federal University (IKBFU) and the Law School of the Higher School of Economics (HSE), will represent Russia at the Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition in Washington from 9 to 15 April 2017. The competition takes place in English and is considered the largest contest for international law students.

To get to the final in the US capital, the teams had to go through the qualifying round in Russia. International law students of leading Russian universities were guided by the rules of the International Court of Justice hearings while preparing their speeches.

The students had to not only build a strong evidence base, but also answer tricky questions of judges, who are international law experts. In addition, the jury assessed the public speaking skills of students.

Also Russian students took part recently in another prestigious competition – the International Commercial Arbitration Competition in San Diego. Participants were given only 60 minutes to try a case, develop a speech draft and convince the arbitrators.

The competition was also in English. Representatives of the Peoples' Friendship University of Russia (RUDN) were among the top five teams in the world.
