Webometrics shows how strongly a university is represented on the Internet.

Spanish-based Cybermetrics Lab releases rankings twice a year following an extensive study. The latest study covers the web presence of 27,000 higher education institutions from all over the world.

Eight Russian universities entered webometics’ top 1,000, up two universities than last year. The most popular Russian universities are Lomonosov Moscow State University, Novosibirsk State University, Higher School of Economics, National Research Nuclear University MEPhI, ITMO National Research University, Tomsk State University, and Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology. In 2017, the largest improvements on Webometrics indicators were shown by South Ural State University, I.M. Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University, Far Eastern Federal University and Tomsk State University.

Webometics recognizes such variables as presence (total number of webpages published on a university’s main domain), impact (average number of external links to a given university website), openness and excellence. Webometrics aims to encourage greater adoption of online publications and open access to information.
