Russian Students Win World Programming Championship
Russian programmers bested their peers from 51 countries.
On 19 April 2018, Beijing hosted the finals of the ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest (ICPC), the most prestigious IT competition. The Moscow State University team won the World Cup; the second place in the gold tier went to Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology and the Beijing and Tokyo Universities. ITMO National Research University and Ural Federal University won the bronze taking 9th and 13th places, respectively. The Russians led China, the USA, South Korea, Japan and Lithuania by the number of medals. The contest involved the best young programmers from 3,000 universities representing 111 countries; 51 countries made the finals. Russia was represented by 11 universities.
Russian universities’ teams have won the contest 13 times since 2000, ITMO University being the top performer with seven Cup victories. Russia has a high-level IT education, its software engineers’ skills are appreciated the world over. Many domestic universities such as Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology, Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University, ITMO University, Ural Federal University and National Research Tomsk State University offer programmes for various IT careers.
