Russian Universities Among the Best in Engineering, Computer Science
Experts assessed universities across the world in engineering fields.
Times Higher Education published annual rankings for computer science and engineering and technology. Russian universities are represented in both fields. Overall, 749 universities were listed for computer science, including 17 Russian higher education centres. ITMO University and Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology were among the top 100 quality IT education providers, placed 74th and 95th, respectively. Other Russian universities ranked for computer science were Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University, Higher School of Economics, National Research Nuclear University MEPhI, Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia, National Research Tomsk Polytechnic University, Novosibirsk State University, Samara University,Saint Petersburg Electrotechnical University “LETI”, National Research Tomsk State University, Ural Federal University etc.
As many as 1,008 universities were ranked for engineering and technology, including 34 from Russia. The Russian league is led by Lomonosov Moscow State University in the 126-150 group, and ITMO University and Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University which advanced, respectively, from the 301-400 and 401-500 groups last year to the 201-250 group. THE also ranked National Research Tomsk Polytechnic University, Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology, Kazan Federal University, National University of Science and Technology MISIS, Higher School of Economics, Novosibirsk State University, Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia, Samara University, South Ural State University, Saint Petersburg Electrotechnical University “LETI”, Far Eastern Federal University, National Research Lobachevsky State University of Nizhni Novgorod, Siberian Federal University, Ural Federal University etc.
The study relied on the same performance indicators as in overall rankings: teaching (the learning environment), research (income, volume and reputation), citations (research influence), international outlook and industry income.
