Three Russian universities were listed in 2017 Academic Rankings of World Universities.

Placed 93rd, Moscow State University (MSU) showed the best result among domestic higher education institutions. ARWU, a Shanghai University project, launched in 2003; MSU appeared in its rankings in 2004 and has been in the top 100 since. Two other Russian universities, Saint Petersburg State University and Novosibirsk State University, have kept their positions in the 301-400 bracket and the 401-500 bracket, respectively. The three universities are in QS and THE rankings, as well as in the ARWU subject rankings published in June 2017.

ARWU experts assess more than a thousand universities across the world every year and publish the best 500. Each university is ranked by six parameters with special emphasis on academic research. ARWU criteria include the number of articles published in Nature and Science journals and the prizes awarded to university staff and alumni.
