The Shanghai Ranking Consultancy published ARWU 2018.

Four Russian higher education centres were listed among the world’s top 500 in Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU). Lomonosov Moscow State University (MGU) was placed 86th, followed by Saint Petersburg State University in the group 301-400. Novosibirsk State University (NSU) and Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (MIPT) entered the group 401-500.

The universities ranked between 501 and 1000 are also published as ARWU World Top 500 Candidates. This list includes eight Russian universities: National Research Tomsk State University and Ural Federal University in the group 701-800, ITMO National Research University, Kazan Federal University and National University of Science and Technology MISIS in the group 801-900 and Higher School of Economics, Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University (SPbPU) and National Research Tomsk Polytechnic University in the group 901-1000. MIPT was the only university representing Russia in the top 500 candidates last year.

ARWU rankings are among the most prestigious; the listed universities’ positions are hard-earned. However, the number of Russian universities in the top 500 increases steadily. In 2015, there were only MGU and SPbPU in ARWU rankings while in 2016 and 2017, Russia was represented by three universities (MGU, SPbPU and NSU). ARWU ranks universities by the number of alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals, the number of highly cited researchers, the number of articles indexed in Science Citation Index – Expanded and Social Sciences Citation Index, and other criteria.
