Russian Universities Increase Representation in THE Rankings

Britain’s Times Higher Education released a new edition of university rankings by subject.

This autumn, the publisher listed the best universities in the world for physical sciences, life sciences, medicine and health subjects and psychology. Russian universities are represented in each broad subject area. Twenty-six Russian higher education centres were listed for physical sciences, up 16 from last year. Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology in 50th position topped the Russian league. MIPT is followed by National Research Nuclear University MEPhI (78th) and Lomonosov Moscow State University (96th). The Russian league table also included National Research Tomsk State University, National Research Tomsk Polytechnic University, ITMO National Research University, Kazan Federal University, Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University, Higher School of Economics, National University of Science and Technology MISIS, Samara University, Far Eastern Federal University, Lobachevsky University, Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia, Ural Federal University and Siberian Federal University and others.

Nine Russian universities were listed for life sciences, up six from 2017. Lomonosov Moscow State University leads the Russian league in the group 126-150; MIPT, NSU, TSU, KFU, FEFU, and I.M. Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University were listed in this subject area for the first time. Seven Russian universities appeared in the rankings for medicine and health subjects; five of them – KFU, NSU, RUDN University, Sechenov University and RNRMU – were highlighted among the best for medical education for the first time. Lomonosov Moscow State University, Higher School of Economics and Saint Petersburg State University are the first ever Russian universities to appear in THE rankings for psychology.
