Another season of short-term courses at Russian universities has ended. Due to quarantine restrictions, most of the classes and events took place online. Here are some of the most fascinating winter schools recaps of 2021.

On March 4, 2021, the two-week VII International Ice Mechanics School-Seminar ended at the Far Eastern Federal University. Students from different countries investigated the physical and mechanical properties of ocean ice. The most memorable event of this school is the sample collection expedition from Russky Island. The participants got 64 samples of unique material, which they studied in modern laboratories of the International Scientific and Arktika Educational Center. The students presented the results of the work at the final conference.

Moscow University of Physics and Technology (MIPT) held a full-time Winter Physics and Mathematics School for high school students in January 2021. The technical course included seminars on physics and mathematics, experiments, quests and theme mind games.

From February 15 to March 5, 2021, students from Venezuela, the Netherlands, Turkey, France and South Korea took part in the International Research School of the National Research University Higher School of Economics Russian Politics and International Affairs. They studied the relationship between political and economic transformations and discussed issues of foreign policy and Russian diplomacy. There also was a How well do you know Russia? quiz and MythBusters round table. The best about this programme was the focus on the development of skills necessary to manage entire research projects at a university level. This experience will be useful for students writing their graduate thesis or applying for a master's degree or graduate school.

The Nizhny Novgorod campus of HSE University held the Winter School on Data Analytics for the fifth time. It focused on current trends and new techniques in machine learning and data mining. The programme included intensive lectures from recognized international experts. Participants from Canada, Moldova, Greece, Italy, Spain, Germany presented their projects.

Samara University ran ten winter schools from October 2020 to February 2021 on topics ranging from fashion research to space materials and technology. One hundred students from Malaysia, Germany, Italy, Mexico, Switzerland, Azerbaijan, Indonesia, Iran, Great Britain, Ukraine, Russia, Poland, Brazil, Morocco, Chile, Finland and Nigeria took part.

January 18 to 31 2021, ETU LETI hosted several online winter schools. The Gems of Russian Culture in Russian Language Lessons school was especially popular. The organisers noted the activity of students from France, Montenegro, Croatia and Japan. During the classes, the university actively used presentations and interactive exhibitions to take participants on virtual tours to museums and the snowy centre of St. Petersburg.

The International Polytechnic Winter Online School, organized by Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University, became one of the largest this year and brought together over 150 international students from 20 countries. In total, 21 programmes in various directions and study engineering and natural sciences, information and digital technologies, civil engineering, energy, business and management, Russian language and culture. Students received international certificates with ECTS credits, which they can use in their universities. As part of the entertainment programme, the participants visited the SPbPU campus, the Hermitage and completed a quiz on Russian history all totally online. For SPbPU, this was the first experience of leading a school in a distance format.

Ural Federal University named after the first President of Russia B.N. Yeltsin traditionally held courses in Russian language and culture Russian Studies in Real Russia and an Intensive Russian language course for beginners. Participants from the USA, Mongolia, Hong Kong, China, Korea, Japan and Austria improved their Russian and took part in various events. The cultural programme included lectures on Russian history, linguistics, politics, workshops, online tours, introduction to cinema and ballet. The schools had a great positive response from the students, many of them are now planning to continue their studies at UrFU.

South Ural State University led several short programmes this winter. From October 2020 to February 2021, the SUSU Virtual Classes project took place. 232 people from China, Brazil, Turkey, India, South Africa, Italy, Poland took part in the classes. The main event was the BRICS Model global virtual stimulation in cooperation with the educators from universities in the United States, South Africa and Russia.
