"Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics" Center

The Center brings together scientists working in the area of theoretical and mathematical physics. The research sphere includes: physics of superstrong electromagnetic and gravitational fields, nonlinear quantum and classical dynamics, relativistic astrophysics and cosmology, nuclear physics, physics of extreme states of matter, modeling of physical, biological and economic processes etc.

The center provides students with high-quality teaching, interesting topics for research, excellent job prospects. Students are expected to be keen on science and to be prepared for active work in the chosen field.

The goal of study in the Center is to prepare high-qualified research engineers able to work in the fields of theoretical and mathematical physics.

Students study the advanced course of applied mathematics, theoretical physics and mathematical modeling. Starting from the sixth semester students take part in scientific research under the supervision of world-famous Russian or foreign research advisor.

The main advantage of the Center is unique international staff; lectures are given by the professors of the University of Torino (Italy), École Politechnique (Paris, France), University of Dusseldorf (Germany) and others. The Center provides internship programs for students and graduates, the participation in international conferences, business trips in the leading Russian and foreign research centers.

Center “Fundamental Research and Particle Physics”

The Center carries out educational, research and innovation activities in the field of elementary particle physics, nuclear physics, cosmology, neutrino physics, cosmo- and astrophysics. The center provides students with an opportunity to work in different spheres, from the creation of modern instruments for experiments in the area of high and low energy to the theoretical study of the processes in the early Universe. Among all the activities, the centre also provides the development of a new method of research of heliosphere, magnetosphere and atmosphere.

The key idea of the center is to create a strong scientific multiskilled base and to prepare highly qualified specialists for international research projects in Russia and abroad.

Center’s main objectives:

Center “Nanostructured Electronics”

Centre "Nanostructured Electronics" gives an opportunity to become part of modern science. The center has high quality equipment and first-class professionals. There is an atmosphere of scientific research and creativity in the Center. Students learn new physical phenomena and how to apply them in practice, create unique electronic devices.

Graduates of the Center become world-class professionals. Through the comprehensive training, students receive fundamental education, practical skills and advanced engineering techniques. For example, on the basis of the laws of quantum mechanics graduates create new nanodevices and nanomaterials.

The main task is to develop professional skills necessary for successful work in the field of physics and nanotechnology of semiconductor multilayer nanoheterostructures based on advanced materials, particle physics and relativistic heavy ions, their electromagnetic radiation, experimental physics states of matter.

Center “Physics of Nonequilibrium Atomic Systems and Composites”

Students do engineering development, examine essential properties of nanoobjects, hybrid systems and processes within, while studying and working at the Centre. That sort of work can help to predestinate upraise of new technical ways of mankind evolvement.

Scholars are actively involved in fundamental and applied studies of advanced scientific and technological fields. They also develop the unique instruments for medical, biological, and environmental industries, for ultra low temperature optical and atomic clock for the purposes of navigational space systems.

The Centre possesses well-developed experimental facilities in MEPhI and cooperates with leading Russian and foreign scientific centers, organizations and universities; it runs international conferences and schools.

The purpose of training at the Centre is to prepare students for research, project, examination, manufacturing and organizational activities on the areas the Center specializes in: device and installations design for separating composites, physics of nonequilibrium atomic systems and composite materials, analysis of atomic, composite, and molecular items.

Main tasks:

  • to enhance the quality of training process of higher qualification professionals based on results of high-impact international research
  • to create its own leading inventions

The advantage of the Centre involves holding a well-prepared instrumentation pool, including unique self-engineered physical installations. Besides, the Centre has its own supercomputer, employing computer research methods and technologies in scientific studies and development of new appliances. Students take part in experimentation process; do mathematic simulation and theoretical evaluations, conduct research under the guidance of leading scientists.

Centre “Humanitarian Research and Technology”

Project–based approach in system of university management has been settled in the world universities. Research, educational and innovation activities are examined as a heap of projects with unique concept notes, business plan, road map, resources provision, and marketing constituent. Centre “Nuclear Energy and Nuclear Technology”

Being a modern innovative learning environment, Center "Nuclear engineering" gives students the opportunity for personal fulfillment and formation of competences required for successful work in the nuclear industry after graduating from MEPhI. The Center provides training for Bachelors, Masters and Specialists for their work in the field of design and operation of new generation NPPs, transport and extra-terrestrial power plants as well as in the field of automation and mathematical modeling in nuclear technology.

The goal of the training is to provide young professionals with modern engineering and management skills.

The key task is to train qualified personnel for the State Corporation "Rosatom" and its foreign partners involved in the operation of NPPs, research and design of innovative energy sources.

Centre “Nuclear Systems and Materials”

In the Centre students learn solid state physics, theoretical and applied materials science, methods of using materials, modeling of the process in condensed matter, working on the modern analytical equipment. World leading professors transfer their experience.

Students can pass practice in leading research institutes, get acquainted with modern production facilities, take part in conferences, acquire reporting skills and broaden their outlook.

The purpose of training in the Center is to prepare materials scientists in the field of nuclear power and alternative energy through the development of scientific fundamental research in collaboration with leading research and educational centers in Russia and abroad.

Centre “Plasma and Laser Investigations and Technologies”

In the Centre scientists and engineers hold interesting and practically important research in the field of plasma, laser and solid state physics. The Center has advanced experimental facilities in MEPhI and closely cooperates with with the largest research and laser centers around the world. Training is conducted by experienced lecturers; there are 30 foreign professors among them.

The key goal of the training in the center is to prepare researchers and developers in the field of plasma, laser and solid-state physics, fusion, photonics, high-temperature superconductivity.

The main goals of the Center are:

  • Creation of new materials with unique properties, new methods for material, laser and nanomedicine research;
  • Modeling of the Universe processes;
  • Development of new lasers, devices, sensors.

The advantages of the Center is the availability of unique installations, tools and codes for research and development of creative abilities of students under the guidance of experts. Education is combined with scientific work, including salaried placement, as well as national and foreign internships.

Centre “Protected Infocommunication Technologies and Systems. Cybersecurity”

The Center has been founded to perform research and development applicable to information security. The Center trains world specialists, able to solve urgent tasks and to develop products and technologies demanded on the market.

The aim of the training in the Center is to engage students in practical work to start developing their professional skills.

The tasks are:

  • to provide the Center laboratories with modern installations;
  • to develop new approaches to information security;
  • to design technologies and products for data protection;
  • to invite practicing professors;
  • to support research projects.

Among the Center advantages are the most relevant research activities, direct work with key IT companies, implementation of projects and research, attracting leading world experts for training and expert support of the students and enhancing international cooperation.

Life Science Centre

The Center is engaged in education and innovation activity, and it is also conducting scientific research and development in the field of Life Science. Students are involved in research and solve urgent problems of the national economy, inventive and innovative activities. Drugs, medical devices, etc. are developed in the laboratories of the Center.

The goal of training in the Center is to train qualified specialists in the field of Life Science and in related fields.

The key tasks of the Centre are:

  • to involve students in scientific research;
  • to establish cooperation with the world research organizations and universities;
  • to implement joint educational projects and scientific work with international organizations based on agreements and contracts.

The advantage of the Center is that the majors are taught by research staff who has worked in the largest international projects to develop advanced computer diagnostic systems. Also, top-class experts from the Russian medical centers take part in educational process.
