Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology

Department of Aeromechanics and Aircraft Engineering

AAE aims at training highly skilled aerospace specialists. The classical core of physics and mathematics study is supplemented by courses in aeromechanics, management theory, physics of flight, as well as computer modelling. The department is based in Zhukovskiy (Moscow).

Department of Atmospheric Physics and Space Study

APSS trains specialists in Earth and space sciences. The course focuses on advanced mechanics, as well as mathematical and computer modelling. The areas of study include space systems, geophysics and management theory.

Department of Biological and Medical Physics

BMP trains in the developing field of “living systems”. Along with the basic physics and mathematics course, students study major subjects — chemistry and biology. The curriculum covers technologies that find wide use in medicine and are embodied in biomedicine, one of the cutting-edge research fields in modern science.

Department of Control and Applied Mathematics

AMM provides extensive training for future specialists in applied mathematics. The basic curriculum is supplemented by a large variety of other courses, ranging across advanced mathematics, discrete analysis, management theory, methods of optimization, modern computer technologies, algorithms, theory of probability and mathematical statistics. Students are engaged in mathematical modelling research in economics, physics and mathematics. The department is linked to such notable employers as Parallels and Acronis.

Department of Fundamental Physics and Energetics

FPE is a unique training ground for future scientists, who will search for complex solutions to global challenges. Technologies, innovations and fundamental physics are the three pillars of the course study. Student research areas vary from nanophysics to physics of space.

Department of General and Applied Physics

Russia’s main scientific brainpower is concentrated at GAP, a place of study of theoretical and experimental physics. In addition to the physics course, students study mathematics and computer science. Young scientists have the opportunity to start their career at such established research centers as the Institute for Theoretical and Experimental Physics (ITEP), Lebedev Physical Institute and the Kurchatov Institute.

Department of Innovation and High Technology

From Year 1, IHT puts a strong emphasis on discrete mathematics and computer science courses, with additional studies in advanced mathematics, machine learning, theory of algorithms and software engineering. All students also study innovation technologies and have an opportunity to implement high technology projects of their own. The department is backed by such employers as Yandex, Parallels, 1C and Sberbank-Technology.

Department of Molecular and Chemical Physics

MCP’s core curriculum comprises physics, chemistry and biology. The study focus ranges from interstellar plasma to algal biofuels, with great attention to computer technology and modelling.

Department of Nano-, Bio-, Information and Cognitive Technology

Moscow-based NBICT combines studies in nano-, bio- and information technologies together with cognitive science. The core course is supplemented by studies in biology, chemistry, biophysics and chemical physics. The training facility is based at the Kurchatov Insitute.

Department of Physical and Quantum Electronics

From day one PQE has been providing excellent training for various areas of high-tech industry. Students study new materials and methods in electronics and create laser and optical systems for supercomputer, aerospace and other fields of engineering.

Department of Radio Engineering and Cybernetics

REC is one of MIPT’s oldest departments, where the core physical and mathematical curriculum merges with courses in advanced electronics engineering, computer science and management. Some of REC’s subdepartments are patronised by such companies and institutions as Intel, NetCracker, ABBYY, Parallels and The Institute for Information Transmission Problems of the Russian Academy of Sciences (IITP RAS). Throughout their degree students have the opportunity to study modern information technologies from computer processor design to data transmission and analysis.
