On October 1, 2020, Asia celebrates one of the most significant and beautiful events of the year the Mid-Autumn Festival. Traditionally, it is an evening to admire the full moon surrounded by your family and give each other "moon cakes" – yuèbings.

This day also marked the 71st National Day of the People's Republic of China and the establishment of diplomatic relations with the Russian Federation.

For many years now, our countries have been united not only by international cooperation, mutual interest in culture and traditions but also by joint projects in the field of science and higher education. Below you can learn about some of them.

On September 8, took place the XX meeting of the Russian-Chinese subcommittee on Cooperation in Education. There was announced that the number of exchanged students between the universities in Russia and China well passed the mark of 100 000 people. Later that month, at one of the most important scientific events in China, Conference on International Exchange of Professionals, during the Russian Science and Technology Week Russian universities have presented heir most ambitious projects to the global community.

An equally interesting event the 5th anniversary festival of the Chinese language and culture will take place online on October 2 and 3. Leading Sinologists from all over Russia, including representatives of Tyumen State University and the School of Oriental Studies at the Higher School of Economics, have prepared a vibrant lecture program on art, literature, Chinese history and tradition, as well as a calligraphy master class and more. All events have open admission.

The partnership between the leading universities in Russia and China have made it possible to launch a large number of joint educational programs. Novosibirsk State University is leading international projects with two Chinese universities. Exchange programs in many fields allow students of NSU and Heilongjiang University in Harbin to gain unique studying abroad experience, and the master program graduates will be able to receive two international diplomas. Another joint project with the Higher Secondary School of Karamay city provides an opportunity for high school pupils from China to continue their studies as first-year students of NSU.

Novosibirsk State University is also a member of the University of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, along with SibFU, UrFU, ETU "LETI", ITMO University and other prestigious educational institutions in Russia, China and the CIS countries.

Tomsk State University, in turn, is actively developing undergraduate programs with Shenyang Polytechnic University. Students can choose one of the various courses: Russian language, Chemistry, Informatics or Financial Economics. TPU, another representative of Tomsk, also offers students double degree programs with universities in China and, in addition, conducts joint scientific work with the country's leading laboratories.

As for the Far Eastern Federal University, ever since its foundation in 1899, it's known as a teaching centre of Chinese, Japanese, Korean and Mongolian languages and cultures. And now the FEFU Department of Sinology is one of the strongest in the country. The university has a rich history of cooperation with universities in Asia and invites students from China to take part in a wide range of educational programs.

Universities in the European part of Russia can also offer foreign students a vast number of modern short-term courses in the Russian language. At South Ural State University, 78 students from Henan University have completed the Intensive Russian Language Course in a distance format in the last two months alone, and researchers at the Center for Digital Transformation at KFU are finishing the development of a mobile app that will help foreign students learn Russian phonetics faster.

2020 also marks the opening of the Baltic Federal University Center for Intercultural Communication with the countries of the Asia-Pacific region. Its main goal will be to introduce Russian students to the languages and cultures of Japan, China and South Korea.
